FAQs
Abrasion Resistant Plates FAQs
Straight answers on grades, hardness, fabrication, certificates and delivery. Can’t find yours? Ask us directly.
01What are abrasion resistant (AR) plates, and how do they differ from mild or structural steel?
Abrasion resistant plates are through-hardened steel plates made to resist sliding wear, impact and gouging in heavy-duty service. Mild and structural steel such as A36 sits at roughly 120–160 HBW and is chosen for strength and formability. AR plate is heat-treated to roughly 360–540 HBW depending on grade, so surfaces that rub against rock, ore, coal, sand or scrap wear away much more slowly.
AR plates keep a low carbon equivalent, so they can still be cut and welded. That is why they are used both as structural wear parts and as replaceable liners.
02Which AR grades are available, and how do I choose between AR400, AR450 and AR500?
AR grades are named after their nominal Brinell hardness. Mills sell the same classes under their own trade names, for example Hardox, Dillidur and SAILHARD. Trade names belong to their owners, and Champak Industries is not affiliated with these manufacturers.
As a rule of thumb: AR400 suits general abrasion with some impact and plate that will be formed or welded; AR450 suits tougher sliding abrasion; AR500 suits severe abrasion where impact is limited. Tell us what material you handle, how hard it hits, the thickness you need and whether the plate will be bent or welded, and we will recommend a grade and confirm current stock.
03Does a harder AR plate always last longer?
No. Hardness resists abrasion, but toughness resists cracking. Very hard plate can crack under heavy impact, tight bending or weld stress, especially in thin sections or in cold conditions.
Where impact is heavy, such as crusher feed or dump bodies loaded from height, a slightly lower hardness with better toughness often outlasts a harder grade. Where wear is mostly sliding abrasion with light impact, higher hardness pays back. Adding thickness is another way to extend life without moving to a harder grade.
04Can AR plates be cut, welded, bent and drilled?
Yes, with the right procedure. AR plates respond well to torch cutting and plasma cutting, and they can be laser or waterjet cut for precise profiles.
Welding: use low-hydrogen consumables and control preheat and interpass temperature for the grade and thickness, because too much heat softens the area next to the weld. Bending: allow a larger radius than mild steel and follow the mill’s minimum bend radius. Drilling: hard plate is difficult to drill, so cut holes by plasma, laser or waterjet where you can. We also cut AR plate to drawing through our wear plate cutting service.
05How are AR plates different from manganese steel plates?
Both resist wear, but they work differently. Manganese (Hadfield) steel is austenitic and work-hardens under severe, repeated impact, so the surface gets harder as it is struck. It is the usual choice for crusher jaws, liners and similar high-impact duty.
AR plate is hard from the start, so it is better for sliding abrasion with light to moderate impact, such as chutes, hoppers, truck bodies and bucket liners. AR plate is also magnetic and much easier to cut and weld. If you are unsure which suits your equipment, send us the application and we will advise.
06Where are abrasion resistant plates used?
Typical uses include conveyors, loading buckets and shovels, crushers, load-carrying parts in mining, dump trucks, lorries, bulldozers, containers, industrial trucks and wear parts for wood processing machines.
The industries we supply include mining, cement, construction, power generation, oil and gas, chemical and petrochemical, fertilizers, pulp and paper, sugar and transport (rail and road).
07What sizes and thicknesses do you supply, and can you cut AR plates to size?
We hold standard sizes and grades in stock and supply customised sizes and grades on request. Send us the thickness, width and length you need, or a drawing, and we will confirm availability.
If you need finished parts rather than full plates, we cut and line to order through our wear plate cutting, wear plate lining and plasma cutting services. Use the metal weight calculator to estimate plate weight for freight and handling.
08What test certificates and documents do you provide?
On request we provide a manufacturer test certificate as per EN 10204 / 3.1B, a 100% radiography test report, a raw materials certificate and a third-party inspection report.
Supporting documents include the commercial invoice, fumigation certification, heat treatment chart, quality assurance plan, packaging list, raw material test report and material traceability report. Tell us which documents you need when you enquire, especially if third-party inspection is required, so we can arrange it before dispatch.
09What are your delivery times, and how do you pack AR plates for export?
We give the delivery schedule when we quote, based on quantity and product. Orders may take up to 5–10 business days in transit. If a grade is out of stock, orders may take up to 2–4 weeks to ship, and we will inform you if this happens.
Every product is marked with lot number, size, grade, degree and our trademark. Plates are packed in wooden crates, pallets or boxes, shrink-wrapped, and carton boxes where suitable, to prevent damage in transit. Export orders use standard export packaging in wooden cases, and we can add custom markings on request. We export from Mumbai.
10How do I get a quote for AR plates, and what affects the price?
Send the grade or hardness, thickness × width × length, quantity, delivery location and any certificate or inspection requirements. Use the quote form, email info@champakindustries.com or call +91 98209 44724 (Monday to Friday 8.30am–5.00pm, Saturday 8.30am–3.30pm).
Price depends on grade and mill origin, thickness, plate size, quantity, any cutting or lining, certificates and inspection, and delivery or export costs. Steel prices move with the market, so we quote against each enquiry rather than publish a fixed price list.
