01What are manganese steel plates, and what makes them different?
Manganese steel plates are non-magnetic austenitic steel with very good work hardening and abrasion resistance. Our range covers 11–14% and 12–14% manganese plates and sheets, Hadfield and Mn13 plates, ASTM A128 / ASME SA128, X120Mn12 and X120Mn13 grades, hot rolled and cold rolled. Plates can be supplied whole or as profiled pieces cut by plasma.

03Why does manganese steel get harder in service?
The surface of high manganese steel work hardens when it is repeatedly hit or abraded, while the core stays tough because of the steel’s high ductility. That is why it absorbs shock safely and keeps wearing well in crushers and similar duties. It needs impact or deformation to harden, so for pure sliding wear without impact an AR plate may suit better. Tell us the duty and we will advise.
04How are manganese steel plates cut and supplied?
Because the steel work hardens, conventional machining is difficult, so plates are usually profiled by plasma cutting. We supply full plates or cut-to-size pieces, including plates for shot blasting machines. Send us the drawing or dimensions, the grade and the quantity.
