Applications :
EN19T was originally introduced for the use in the machine tool and motor industries for gears, pinions, shafts, spindles and the like. Later its applications became much more extended and it is now widely used in areas such as the oil and gas industries. EN19T is suitable for applications such as gears, bolts, studs and a wide variety of applications where a good quality high tensile steel grade is suited.
- Forging :
- Pre heat carefully, then raise temperature to 850-1200oC for forging. Do not forge below 850oC. After forging cool slowly in still air.
- Annealing :
- Heat the EN19T slowly to 680-700oC. Cool in air.
- Hardening :
- This steel grade is commonly supplied ready heat treated. If further heat treatment is required annealed EN19 should be heated slowly to 860-890oC and after adequate soaking at this temperature quench in oil. Temper as soon as tools reach room temperature.
- Tempering :
- Heat carefully to a suitable temperature selected by reference to a tempering chart or table. Soak at the temperature for 2 hours per 25mm of ruling section, then allow to cool in air. Tempering between 250-375oC is not advised as tempering within this range will reduce the impact value.
- Heat Treatment :
- Heat treatment temperatures, including rate of heating, cooling and soaking times will vary due to factors such as the shape and size of each steel component. Other considerations during the heat treatment process include the type of furnace, quenching medium and work piece transfer facilities. EN19 and EN19T: EN19T means EN19 hardened and tempered to tensile condition T (850–1000 N/mm²). The same steel is supplied annealed, for machining before hardening, or in conditions R to W listed in the mechanical properties table. “Tools” in the hardening step means the parts being hardened.

Reading the table: The DIN grade is 42CrMo4 (material number 1.7225), now in EN 10083-3, and the AISI/SAE grades are 4140 and 4142. EN19 is the older BS 970 name for 709M40. These grades have similar but not identical limits; order the one your drawing names, or state that an equivalent is acceptable.

Condition codes and ruling section: R to W are BS 970 tensile conditions; each gives a tensile range that can be met only up to the size shown in the last column (the ruling section). For example, condition T (850–1000 N/mm²) is listed for sections over 29 mm up to 100 mm. “a% on 5.665ÖSo” is elongation on a gauge length of 5.65√So. 01What is EN19 steel?
EN19 is a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel, the older BS 970 name for 709M40. It is equivalent to 42CrMo4 (1.7225) and close to AISI 4140, and is used for gears, shafts and studs.
02Is EN19 the same as 42CrMo4 and 4140?
They are close equivalents with similar chemistry, but each standard has its own limits and property tables. Order the grade your drawing names, or confirm an equivalent is acceptable.
03What does EN19T mean?
EN19T is EN19 hardened and tempered to condition T, with a tensile strength of 850–1000 N/mm². Other conditions run from R (700–850) to W (1075–1225).
04Why do the conditions have size limits?
Thick sections cool more slowly when quenched, so they cannot reach the higher strength levels. Each condition is listed up to a maximum ruling section; choose one that covers your plate thickness.

Buy annealed plate if you will machine heavily and then harden the part. Buy hardened and tempered plate, such as EN19T, if you will machine it and use it without further heat treatment.
