Champak Industries is a large stock of shipbuilding steel plate. This is normally used for shipbuilding and offshore use. We keen on supporting customers' requirements of thicker and higher quality plates especially when through thickness testing is important.
Mainly our steel plates for shipbuilding are approved by either Lloyds Register of Shipping (LRS) or Det Norske Veritas (DNV).
We can also support customers who require shipbuilding plates to ABS though this comes as an additional report to the MTC
Shipbuilding Steel Plate Ex-Stock
- EH36 and DH36 and AH36 High strength shipbuilding steels and Grade A normal strength plates available
- Thickness 5 – 150 mm
- Widths – 1500, 2000, 2055, 2500 and 3000 metres

| Standard | Grade | Minimum Thickness (mm) | Maximum Thickness (mm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lloyds Register | Grade A | 5 | 150 |
| Lloyds Register | AH36 | 5 | 150 |
| Lloyds Register | DH36 | 5 | 150 |
| Lloyds Register | EH36 | 5 | 150 |
Compare Shipbuilding Grades Before Purchasing
| Grade | Strength level | Charpy test temperature | Typical selection focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Normal strength, 235 MPa minimum yield | None for thinner plate | General hull structure |
| B / D / E | Normal strength | 0 / −20 / −40 °C | Areas needing more toughness |
| AH36 | Higher strength, 355 MPa minimum yield | 0 °C | Weight-saving hull structure |
| DH36 | Higher strength, 355 MPa minimum yield | −20 °C | Critical hull areas, offshore structures |
| EH36 | Higher strength, 355 MPa minimum yield | −40 °C | Cold-water service and critical joints |
Values follow the common classification-society rules for hull structural steel, for orientation. Requirements vary with thickness; follow the rules of the society your vessel is classed with.
How to Select the Right Shipbuilding Plate
- Class society
- Strength
- Impact temperature
- Thickness
- Through-thickness
Order the grade shown on the approved drawings, certified by the society the vessel or structure is classed with. Higher-strength grades allow thinner, lighter structure; the D and E grades add toughness for colder service and critical areas. For thick plate in restrained joints, add through-thickness and ultrasonic requirements. This guidance supports purchasing; the approved drawings and class rules decide the grade.
Classification Societies and Standards
| Standard or body | Scope |
|---|---|
| Lloyd's Register (LR) | Rules for hull structural steel; Grade A is the “Lloyds A” in this page's name |
| DNV, ABS, BV, NK, KR, RINA | Other classification societies whose certificates are listed on our product pages |
| ASTM A131 | Structural steel for ships, with grades A to EH36 |
| EN 10164 | Through-thickness (Z) properties: Z15, Z25, Z35 |
| EN 10204 | Types of inspection documents (3.1, 3.2) |
The grade names are harmonised between societies, but the certificate must come from the society your vessel is classed with. State whether a society-witnessed 3.2 certificate is required, as noted for ABS in the text above.
Plate Sizes and Surface Condition
- Thickness5 – 150 mm
- Width1500 – 3000 mm
- Length6 / 12 / 14 m
These figures come from the ex-stock list above; our Steel Plate for Ship Building & Oil Platform page lists a wider range of 3–180 mm × 1250–4000 mm × 3000–18000 mm. They describe the range offered, not the size of every plate in stock. Shot blasting to Sa 2.5 and priming can be requested.
Applications and Service Requirements
| Application | Grade to evaluate | Selection input |
|---|---|---|
| Hull plating and decks | A, AH36 | Class rules, thickness and location |
| Critical hull areas and ice belts | DH36, EH36, D, E | Impact temperature and thickness |
| Offshore platforms and jackets | DH36, EH36 with Z properties | Through-thickness tests and UT |
| Stiffeners, frames and longitudinals | Bulb flats, flat bars, angles | Section size and grade |
| Barges and workboats | A, AH36 | Class requirement and plate size |
These are material application examples. Final selection follows the approved drawings and class rules.
Cut-to-Size Plates and Profiles
Shipbuilding plate can be cut to size and shape to your drawings through our cutting services, including plasma cutting. Send the grade, society, thickness, drawing, quantity and tolerances, and say whether society markings must be transferred to each cut piece.
Testing, Material Documents and Traceability
State the certificate type and test scope with the RFQ. A mill test certificate for the plate and the company's quality-system certification are different documents.
| Requirement | What to identify in the order |
|---|---|
| Society certificate | Classification society, grade and certificate type (for example 3.2 with society stamp) |
| Impact and tensile results | As required by the grade, at the specified test temperature |
| Supplementary tests | Through-thickness (Z), ultrasonic testing standard and class |
| Marking and traceability | Society stamp, heat number and grade on each plate and cut piece |
Review our Quality Policy and include your class and inspection requirements in the enquiry.
Why Source Shipbuilding Plates from Champak Industries?
Our Mumbai service centre supplies shipbuilding plate and sections together — plate, bulb flats, flat bars and angles — so one enquiry can cover a hull block. Plates can be cut to size and shape to your drawings, with society certificates for India or export. Read our Company Profile for the wider supply offering.
Shipbuilding Plate Price and Quotation
Price depends on the grade, society certification, thickness, plate size, quantity, Z and UT testing, surface treatment, cutting, packing and destination. Higher-strength and E grades cost more than Grade A. Send a complete requirement for a quotation stating the price basis, tax/freight treatment and validity.
Domestic Dispatch and Export Requirements
For domestic orders, give the delivery address, shipyard access and unloading requirements. For exports, specify the destination, delivery terms, packing and marking instructions and the shipping documents required, with your required delivery date.

Frequently Asked Questions About Ship Building Plates
01What is Lloyds A shipbuilding plate?
It is normal-strength Grade A hull structural steel certified by Lloyd's Register. The same grade is certified by other classification societies, and ASTM A131 also covers it.
02Which grades do you supply?
Grade A normal-strength plate and AH36, DH36 and EH36 higher-strength plate are listed, together with bulb flats, flat bars and angles. Ask for other grades such as B, D, E or AH32 in your enquiry.
03What is the difference between AH36, DH36 and EH36?
All three have 355 MPa minimum yield strength. They differ in Charpy impact test temperature: 0 °C for AH36, −20 °C for DH36 and −40 °C for EH36.
04Can DH36 plate be used where EH36 is specified?
Only if the classification society certifies the plate as EH36. Good test results alone do not change the certified grade, so order the grade on your approved drawings.
05Which classification societies can certify the plate?
Our product pages list Lloyd's Register and DNV, with ABS, GL, BV, NK, KR and RINA also mentioned. Name the society your vessel is classed with on your enquiry.
06What are Z15, Z25 and Z35?
They are through-thickness ductility classes to EN 10164, used to guard against lamellar tearing in thick, restrained welded joints. Z35 is the highest class.
07What plate sizes are available?
The ex-stock list gives 5–150 mm thick, 1500–3000 mm wide and 6, 12 or 14 m long. Send the exact grade and dimensions to confirm availability.
08Can you supply shot-blasted, primed or cut plates?
Yes. Shot blasting and priming can be requested, and plates can be cut to size and shape to your drawings with markings transferred.
09Which certificates should my RFQ request?
Request a classification-society certificate for the grade, normally EN 10204 3.2 with the society stamp, plus any Z or ultrasonic test reports your drawings require.
10How do I obtain a price and delivery offer?
Send the grade, society, supplementary tests, dimensions, quantity, surface treatment, cutting needs, destination and required date.
