Work hardening needs impact: Manganese steel reaches high surface hardness only under repeated impact or heavy pressure. Our product pages quote different in-service figures — 500, 550 and at least 600 BHN — because the result depends on the application. Under sliding abrasion with little impact the surface stays near its delivered hardness, and quenched abrasion resistant plate is usually the better choice.
Welding and heat: Manganese steel can be welded, but it loses toughness if held at elevated temperature. Use low heat input, keep the plate cool between passes and use austenitic manganese electrodes — our X120MN12 page specifies 0.8–1.0% C, 15–18% Mn shielded electrodes. Do not preheat. The same care applies to thermal cutting, and the steel cannot be hardened or softened by normal heat treatment.
