X120MN12 grade manganese plate & Sheets Supplier in Mumbai-India.
Manganese steel - also known as hard manganese steel or manganese hard steel – in its quenched state has the emblematic of significantly increasing its original low tensile strength and hardness in the cold-worked layer by intense cold working without this having an adverse effect on the originally very high persistence. The cold working performed increases the wear-resistance enormously. It can be bent, flanged and pierced because of its high persistence. Chipping at room temperature with hard metal tools is only possible to a limited extent.
Reading the text: “In its quenched state” means in the water-toughened condition, “persistence” means toughness, and “chipping” means machining (chip-forming). Hard manganese steel is difficult to machine because it work-hardens under the tool, so machining is limited to hard-metal tools at low speed.
X120MN12 Grade Manganese Plates: Purchasing Specification
| Requirement | What to specify |
|---|---|
| Grade and standard | X120Mn12 (1.3401) or 12–14% manganese steel; say whether your drawing cites EN, DIN or the A128 Grade B-2 composition, and state the carbon and manganese range. |
| Condition | Austenitic, water-toughened (quenched) plate; it is non-magnetic and soft as delivered, and hardens only where it is worked. |
| Thickness | Properties vary with thickness; give the thickness range of your parts. |
| Cutting | Plasma, laser or waterjet cutting; oxy-fuel (flame) cutting is not suited to austenitic manganese steel. |
| Welding | Austenitic manganese consumables and low heat input; do not preheat and keep the plate cool between passes. |
| Documents | Mill test certificate (EN 10204 3.1) with chemistry and mechanical properties. |
Typical use of manganese steel
- Hangers in blasting machines,
- Crusher jaws
- Crusher jaw inserts
- Power shovel bolts
- Power shovel connectors
- Gripping teeth
- Impact mills
- Centrifugal mills
- Protective grills
- Doors
- Cladding
- Safety plates
It is used generally for intense percussion and impact stresses.
Manganese steel can be welded both electrically and autogenously. Electrical welding is, however, preferred because with autogenously welding procedures, burn-off of manganese and carbon may easily occur. Shielded electrodes at 0.8% - 1.0% C and 15 - 18% Mn must be used for electric welding. The wear resistance is somewhat lower at the weld seam than with the remaining material.
Welding and cutting: Keep heat input low and do not preheat: reheating austenitic manganese steel can make it brittle, so interpass temperatures are commonly limited to about 250 °C. Oxy-fuel (flame) cutting is not suited to this steel; use plasma, laser or waterjet cutting.
Material data sheet 1.3401
| DIN | AISI | BS | AFNOR | UNI |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.3401 | A 128 | BW 10 | Z 120 M 12 | X 120 Mn 12 |
Standards table: ASTM A128 is the standard for austenitic manganese steel castings and the BS and AFNOR names are older national designations; the current EN name is X120Mn12 (1.3401). They are comparable, not always identical.
Chemical composition
| C | Mn | Si | P | S |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1,10 - 1,30 | 12,00 - 13,00 | 0,30 - 0,50 | max. 0,100 | max. 0,04 |
Reading the numbers: Decimal commas are used: 1,10 – 1,30 means 1.10–1.30% carbon, and “max. 0,100” means 0.100% phosphorus maximum.
Mechanical properties at room temperature
| Dimensions | Yield point N/mm² | Tensile strength N/mm² | Ductile yield (Lo=5do) | Contraction % |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| <= 16 mm | >= 410 | 680 - 1180 | >= 40 | >= 40 |
| 17 mm - 40 mm | >= 390 | 830 - 1080 | >= 42 | >= 40 |
| 41 mm - 100 mm | >= 345 | 780 - 1080 | >= 45 | >= 45 |
Reading the properties: “Dimensions” are plate thicknesses, “ductile yield” is elongation (on a 5-diameter gauge length) and “contraction” is reduction of area. N/mm² equals MPa.
How the Four Manganese Steel Pages Differ
The four pages describe the same family of austenitic manganese steel (about 12–14% manganese and 1.1–1.3% carbon), listed under different names. The steel is soft and very tough as delivered and hardens at the surface under repeated impact, so it suits crushers and impact wear better than pure sliding abrasion.
| Page | What it covers | Typical use (from the pages) |
|---|---|---|
| 12-14% | X120Mn12 / 1.3401 steel, 11.5–14% Mn, with chemistry, mechanical and physical tables | Transport parts, grizzly bars, truck bodies |
| X120MN12 (this page) | DIN 1.3401 data sheet, 12.0–13.0% Mn, properties by thickness up to 100 mm | Crusher jaws, shovel parts, impact mills, protective plates |
| MN13 | Fully austenitic, quench-annealed, non-magnetic 12–14% manganese plate | Severe surface wear with a work-hardening effect |
| HADFIELD | The same steel under its original name: about 250 BHN, work hardening to 500 BHN | Quarries, mines, foundry, concrete and brick works, scrap, automotive |
State the carbon and manganese range and the standard on your enquiry; mills differ in detail.

Typical uses include crusher jaws, grizzly bars, truck bodies, impact mills, shovel parts and other parts under heavy impact and abrasion. Tell us the load, temperature and service conditions so the right grade and thickness can be quoted.
Cutting, Fabrication and Welding
Champak Industries describes full and part plate/profile supply and a plasma-cutting service. Send drawings, quantities, tolerances and edge preparation for your parts. Cut by plasma, laser or waterjet (not oxy-fuel), weld with austenitic manganese consumables at low heat input, and do not preheat or heat-treat the plate after delivery without the mill’s advice.
