MN13 Grade Manganese Plates

Mn13 fully austenitic, quench-annealed, non-magnetic manganese steel plate

Mn13 is a fully austenitic, quench-annealed, non-magnetic 12–14% manganese steel plate whose surface work-hardens under severe wear while the layers beneath stay tough. It is used for crusher jaws, grizzly bars, truck bodies, impact mills, shovel parts and other parts under heavy impact and abrasion. For a quotation, send the thickness, plate size or cutting drawing, quantity, any impact-test requirement and the delivery destination.

MN13 Grade Manganese Plates: Purchasing Specification

RequirementWhat to specify
Grade and standardX120Mn12 (1.3401) or 12–14% manganese steel; say whether your drawing cites EN, DIN or the A128 Grade B-2 composition, and state the carbon and manganese range.
ConditionAustenitic, water-toughened (quenched) plate; it is non-magnetic and soft as delivered, and hardens only where it is worked.
ThicknessProperties vary with thickness; give the thickness range of your parts.
CuttingPlasma, laser or waterjet cutting; oxy-fuel (flame) cutting is not suited to austenitic manganese steel.
WeldingAustenitic manganese consumables and low heat input; do not preheat and keep the plate cool between passes.
DocumentsMill test certificate (EN 10204 3.1) with chemistry and mechanical properties.

The Standard of this 12-14 % Manganese includes

  • Corrosion Resistant Steel
  • Creusabro,
  • 12-14% Manganese Steel,
  • Head field manganese plate,
  • Manganese steel, ® M / X120 Mn12 / 12-14% Manganese.

The standards list: The list names related names for the same family: 12–14% manganese steel, Hadfield (“Head field”) manganese plate, X120Mn12 and Creusabro M. “Corrosion Resistant Steel” in the list does not apply: manganese steel is not corrosion resistant. Creusabro is Industeel’s wear-plate brand, of which only Creusabro M is a manganese steel.

The main feature of this product is its High wear and resistance

Severe wear on the surface has a work-hardening effect on the austenitic structure of this steel.

Hardness figures: The surface hardens from about 200 BHN as delivered to roughly 500–550 BHN in service; “at least 600 BHN” is above what is normally reached, so use the 500 BHN figure on the Hadfield page for design. Hardening only occurs where the surface is worked by impact or heavy pressure.

This, when combined with the level of carbon in accordance with the international standards, leads To increase hardness from 200BHN (in as delivered plate) up to an in-service hardness of at least 600BHN.

This work-hardening capability renews itself throughout in-service life. The under layers not work-hardened maintain an excellent resistance to shock and a very high ductility.

How the Four Manganese Steel Pages Differ

The four pages describe the same family of austenitic manganese steel (about 12–14% manganese and 1.1–1.3% carbon), listed under different names. The steel is soft and very tough as delivered and hardens at the surface under repeated impact, so it suits crushers and impact wear better than pure sliding abrasion.

PageWhat it coversTypical use (from the pages)
12-14%X120Mn12 / 1.3401 steel, 11.5–14% Mn, with chemistry, mechanical and physical tablesTransport parts, grizzly bars, truck bodies
X120MN12DIN 1.3401 data sheet, 12.0–13.0% Mn, properties by thickness up to 100 mmCrusher jaws, shovel parts, impact mills, protective plates
MN13 (this page)Fully austenitic, quench-annealed, non-magnetic 12–14% manganese plateSevere surface wear with a work-hardening effect
HADFIELDThe same steel under its original name: about 250 BHN, work hardening to 500 BHNQuarries, mines, foundry, concrete and brick works, scrap, automotive

State the carbon and manganese range and the standard on your enquiry; mills differ in detail.

Applications for MN13 Grade Manganese Plates

Ore processing plant with conveyors and crushing equipment
Crushing, mining and ore processing

Typical uses include crusher jaws, grizzly bars, truck bodies, impact mills, shovel parts and other parts under heavy impact and abrasion. Tell us the load, temperature and service conditions so the right grade and thickness can be quoted.

Cutting, Fabrication and Welding

Champak Industries describes full and part plate/profile supply and a plasma-cutting service. Send drawings, quantities, tolerances and edge preparation for your parts. Cut by plasma, laser or waterjet (not oxy-fuel), weld with austenitic manganese consumables at low heat input, and do not preheat or heat-treat the plate after delivery without the mill’s advice.

Testing, Inspection Documents and Traceability

RequirementWhat to identify in the order
Mill test certificateEN 10204 3.1 showing brand and grade, heat number, chemistry and mechanical properties
Impact testCharpy test temperature and minimum energy, if required
Ultrasonic testStandard and acceptance class, if required
TraceabilityHeat and plate number transferred to cut pieces

MN13 Grade Manganese Plates: Frequently Asked Questions

01

What is MN13 Grade Manganese Plates?

Mn13 is a fully austenitic, quench-annealed, non-magnetic 12–14% manganese steel plate whose surface work-hardens under severe wear while the layers beneath stay tough.

02

What is Mn13 manganese plate?

A 12–14% manganese steel plate that is fully austenitic, quench annealed and non-magnetic, used where severe wear and impact work-harden the surface.

03

How does it get harder in service?

Severe wear and impact work-harden the surface of the austenitic structure, while the layers beneath stay tough and resistant to shock.

04

Is Mn13 the same as X120Mn12 and Hadfield steel?

They are the same family of austenitic manganese steel under different names, as the standards list on the page shows; confirm the carbon and manganese range with the mill.

05

Can Mn13 be welded?

Yes, with a qualified procedure and consumables suited to the grade; follow the mill’s recommendations for preheat and heat input.

06

Which certificate should I request?

An EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate showing the brand and grade, heat number, chemistry and mechanical properties, plus impact results where you specify a test temperature.

07

Can another brand replace Mn13?

Brands of the same class are comparable, not identical. Chemistry, toughness, thickness range and processing advice differ by mill, so confirm any substitution with your engineer.

08

Can Mn13 plate be cut to size?

Yes. Champak Industries lists full and part plate and profile supply and a plasma-cutting service; send drawings, quantities and tolerances with your enquiry.

09

Which sizes are available?

Availability depends on the grade, mill and thickness; send the thickness, width and length you need and sizes will be confirmed at quotation.

10

How do I get a price and delivery date?

Send the grade, thickness, size or cutting drawing, quantity, destination and required date through the enquiry form below, by WhatsApp or by phone.
