Hadfield Managanese Plates

Hadfield austenitic manganese steel plate that work-hardens from 250 to 500 BHN

Hadfield manganese steel plate (ASTM A128 Grade B-2, 1.3401 X120Mn13) is an austenitic steel of about 13% manganese that is non-magnetic, tough, and work-hardens from about 220–250 BHN to 500 BHN in service. It is used for crusher jaws, grizzly bars, truck bodies, impact mills, shovel parts and other parts under heavy impact and abrasion. For a quotation, send the thickness, plate size or cutting drawing, quantity, any impact-test requirement and the delivery destination.

Hadfield Managanese Plates

Hadfield manganese plates & Sheets Supplier in Mumbai-India

Hadfield Manganese Steel Plates Widely known for its work hardening properties, are amenable to high-impact wear applications or those in which scratch abrasion is encountered. These hardened steel plates enhance almost five times the hardness of mild steel and almost three times the hardness of annealed stainless steel. Due to this, one can enjoy a longer lifespan and extended protection of their equipment and facilities.

Reading the text: “Managanese” in the page title means manganese. The “five times harder than mild steel” figure refers to the work-hardened surface (about 500–550 BHN against about 120 BHN for mild steel); as delivered, at 220–250 BHN, the plate is about twice as hard as mild steel. Austenitic stainless steel is also softer than the work-hardened surface.

Hadfield Managanese Plates: Purchasing Specification

RequirementWhat to specify
Grade and standardX120Mn12 (1.3401) or 12–14% manganese steel; say whether your drawing cites EN, DIN or the A128 Grade B-2 composition, and state the carbon and manganese range.
ConditionAustenitic, water-toughened (quenched) plate; it is non-magnetic and soft as delivered, and hardens only where it is worked.
ThicknessProperties vary with thickness; give the thickness range of your parts.

Use the table, and ask the mill for the guaranteed values.

Damaged characters: Some symbols were damaged on the original page and show as “”. In this table the character between 1.3401 and X120Mn13 stands for the dash that joins the two designations. The current EN name is X120Mn12 (1.3401); X120Mn13 is an older or alternative form.

Chemical Analysis Typical values (% weight)

C Si Mn Mn P
1.13 0.40 13 0.003 ≤ 0.20

Chemistry table: The second “Mn” heading should read S (sulphur, 0.003), and “P ≤ 0.20” looks too high: ASTM A128 allows 0.07% phosphorus maximum for this grade, so confirm the value with the mill.

Reading the properties: “KCV 20 C (68 F)” means the Charpy V-notch test at 20 °C (68 °F). Guaranteed values are the minimums; typical values are what the mill usually reaches.

How the Four Manganese Steel Pages Differ

The four pages describe the same family of austenitic manganese steel (about 12–14% manganese and 1.1–1.3% carbon), listed under different names. The steel is soft and very tough as delivered and hardens at the surface under repeated impact, so it suits crushers and impact wear better than pure sliding abrasion.

Cutting, Fabrication and Welding

Champak Industries describes full and part plate/profile supply and a plasma-cutting service. Send drawings, quantities, tolerances and edge preparation for your parts. Cut by plasma, laser or waterjet (not oxy-fuel), weld with austenitic manganese consumables at low heat input, and do not preheat or heat-treat the plate after delivery without the mill’s advice.

03

What hardness values does the page list?

The table lists typical hardness of 220 HB and guaranteed 180–245 HB, and the list on the page says 250 BHN, work hardening to 500 BHN.

04

Which applications are listed?

Quarries and construction, mines, the iron industry and foundry, concrete and brick works, scrap handling and the automotive industry.

05

Can Hadfield manganese be welded?

Yes, with a qualified procedure and consumables suited to the grade; follow the mill’s recommendations for preheat and heat input.

06

Which certificate should I request?

An EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate showing the brand and grade, heat number, chemistry and mechanical properties, plus impact results where you specify a test temperature.

07

Can another brand replace Hadfield manganese?

Brands of the same class are comparable, not identical. Chemistry, toughness, thickness range and processing advice differ by mill, so confirm any substitution with your engineer.

08

Can Hadfield manganese plate be cut to size?

Yes. Champak Industries lists full and part plate and profile supply and a plasma-cutting service; send drawings, quantities and tolerances with your enquiry.

09

Which sizes are available?

Availability depends on the grade, mill and thickness; send the thickness, width and length you need and sizes will be confirmed at quotation.

10
