Prices are indicative basic material prices in rupees per kg. They depend on grade, thickness, plate size, quantity, mill and delivery, and they exclude GST, freight, cutting and testing. “On request” means no market price is published for the material; send an enquiry for a quotation.
How the Weight Is Calculated
Weight is volume times density. With sizes in millimetres and density in g/cm³, the result is in kilograms after dividing by 1,000,000.
| Shape | Weight in kg | Sizes needed |
|---|---|---|
| Plate and flat bar | L × W × T × density ÷ 1,000,000 | Length, width, thickness |
| Round bar | π ÷ 4 × D² × L × density ÷ 1,000,000 | Diameter, length |
| Square bar | S² × L × density ÷ 1,000,000 | Side, length |
| Round tube | π ÷ 4 × (D² − (D − 2t)²) × L × density ÷ 1,000,000 | Outside diameter, wall thickness, length |
| Disc | π ÷ 4 × D² × T × density ÷ 1,000,000 | Diameter, thickness |
Theoretical weight: The result is a theoretical weight from nominal sizes and a typical density. Mill thickness tolerance, edge trimming, bevels and cut-outs change the actual weight, and plate is normally invoiced on actual weighed weight.
Plate Weight per Square Metre
Weight in kg per square metre for common thicknesses, from thickness × density. Multiply by the plate area in m² for the weight of a plate.
| Thickness | Carbon and alloy steel (7.85) | Stainless steel (8.00) | Aluminium (2.70) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 mm | 47.1 | 48.0 | 16.2 |
| 8 mm | 62.8 | 64.0 | 21.6 |
| 10 mm | 78.5 | 80.0 | 27.0 |
| 12 mm | 94.2 | 96.0 | 32.4 |
| 16 mm | 125.6 | 128.0 | 43.2 |
| 20 mm | 157.0 | 160.0 | 54.0 |
| 25 mm | 196.3 | 200.0 | 67.5 |
| 32 mm | 251.2 | 256.0 | 86.4 |
| 40 mm | 314.0 | 320.0 | 108.0 |
| 50 mm | 392.5 | 400.0 | 135.0 |
| 63 mm | 494.5 | 504.0 | 170.1 |
| 80 mm | 628.0 | 640.0 | 216.0 |
| 100 mm | 785.0 | 800.0 | 270.0 |
Values in kg/m², from thickness in mm × density in g/cm³. Typical densities; alloys vary slightly.
How the Market Prices Stay Current
The prices on this page come from a price file that an automated price agent refreshes from market rate sources. The agent follows these steps.
1. Read the sources
It reads the market rate lists and price pages the company has set up.
2. Extract the prices with AI
An AI model finds the price per kg for each material and quotes the exact line it came from.
3. Check before publishing
A price is rejected if the quoted line is not in the source. Large jumps and first-time prices are held for a person to approve.
4. Update this page
Accepted prices are written to the price file, and the board above shows the update date and the change.
No guessing: If a material has no price in the sources, the agent keeps its last price and the board shows “On request” until one is published. The prices are indicative and are not a quotation.
Weight Calculator: Frequently Asked Questions
01How is the weight calculated?
Weight is volume times density: for a plate, length × width × thickness in mm × density in g/cm³ ÷ 1,000,000 gives kilograms. Round bars, square bars, tubes and discs use their own volume formulas.
02Is the calculated weight exact?
No. It is a theoretical weight from nominal sizes and a typical density. Mill tolerances, trimming, bevels and cut-outs change the actual weight, and plate is normally invoiced on actual weight.
03Which densities are used?
Typical values: 7.85 g/cm³ for carbon, alloy, wear, high tensile, Corten, armour and ship building steel, 7.87 for manganese steel, 8.00 for stainless steel, 2.70 for aluminium, and 7.94 to 8.89 for the nickel alloys.
04Where do the prices come from?
From a price file refreshed by an automated price agent that reads market rate sources and extracts the price per kg with an AI model, with checks before anything is published.
05Are the prices a quotation?
No. They are indicative basic material prices per kg and exclude GST, freight, cutting, testing and packing. Price depends on grade, thickness, size, quantity and delivery; send an enquiry for a quotation.
06Why does a material show “On request”?
No market price has been published for it yet. You can enter your own price per kg in the calculator, or send an enquiry.
07Can I use inches?
Yes. Switch the unit toggle to inch; sizes are converted and the result stays in kilograms, tonnes and pounds.
08How do I get a price for my size?
Use the “Get a quotation for this size” button, which copies the material, size and calculated weight into the enquiry form below.
