Alloy Code Derivative
| Alloy series | Major alloying element |
|---|---|
| 1. | Pure aluminium (99.0% and greater) |
| 2. | Copper is major addition |
| 3. | Manganese is major addition |
| 4. | Silicon is major addition |
| 5. | Magnesium is major addition |
| 6. | Magnesium and silicon are major additions |
| 7. | Zinc is the major addition |
| 8. | Other Alloys |
Understanding an Alloy code
an alloy code is made up of 4 digits e.g. 5052 where:
- 5 = major alloying element i.e. magnesium
- 0 = Indicates changes to minor alloying elements i.e. no changes to original alloy since it was introduced
- 52 = Alloy identification number i.e. identifies the chemical composition of this alloy
Alloy Code derivative used in Rolled Products
| Alloy | Example Alloy |
|---|---|
| 1. | 1145 |
| 3. | 3003 |
| 5. | 5052 |
Heat Treatable and Non-heat Treatable Alloys
| Alloy | Treatable/Non-treatable |
|---|---|
| 1. | Non-heat treatable |
| 2. | Heat treatable |
| 3. | Non-heat treatable |
| 5. | Non-heat treatable |
| 6. | Heat treatable |
| 7. | Heat treatable |
Non-heat treatable alloys can be hardened by cold work. The degree of work hardening is designated by the Temper. Heat treatable alloys (the 2000, 6000, and 7000 series) are able to be solution treated and then age-hardened.
Temper Designation Systems H Tempers
| Temper | Hardness |
|---|---|
| 0 | Soft |
| H?2 | 1/4 hard |
| H?4 | 1/2 hard |
| H?6 | 3/4 hard |
| H?8 | Hard |
Where "?" can be read as:
- 1 = As rolled - no final anneal e.g. H12
- 2 = Strain hardened and then partially annealed e.g. H24
- 3 = Strain hardened and then stabilised (at a lower temperature) e.g. H34
T tempers: The table covers H (strain-hardened) tempers for non-heat-treatable alloys. Heat-treatable alloys use T tempers: for example T6 is solution heat-treated and artificially aged, and T651 is T6 stress-relieved by stretching, common for machined plate.
Three-Digit H Tempers
For marine applications there are specific tempers in select high magnesium alloys. H116 and H321 tempers have virtually identical properties. H116 tempers are strain hardened as final operations and H321 tempers are thermally stabilized.

| Vehicle bodies and tankers | 5052, 5083, 5454, 5754 | Forming, welding and operating temperature |
| Flooring and walkways | Treadplate in 3003 or 5052 | Pattern, thickness and slip resistance |

Cut-to-Size Plates and Profiles
Aluminium plate can be cut to size and plasma-profiled to your drawings, as listed in the stock tables above, through our cutting services and plasma cutting. Send the alloy, temper, thickness, drawing, quantity and tolerances, and tell us if a PE coating must stay on during cutting.
Testing, Material Documents and Traceability
State the certificate type and test scope with the RFQ. A mill test certificate for the plate and the company's quality-system certification are different documents.
| Requirement | What to identify in the order |
|---|---|
| Material certificate | EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2, showing alloy, temper, chemistry and mechanical results |
| Marine approval | Classification society (for example DNV, ABS or LR) and ASTM B928 corrosion tests where required |
| Traceability | Cast or lot number on the plate and certificate; transfer to cut pieces where required |
| Inspection | Buyer or third-party inspection, flatness checks and report format |
Review our Quality Policy and include your project inspection requirements in the enquiry.

Aluminium Plate Price and Quotation
Price depends on the alloy, temper, thickness, size, quantity, finish, coating, cutting, certification, packing and destination. Heat-treatable aerospace alloys generally cost more than 1000, 3000 and 5000 series. Send a complete requirement for a quotation stating the price basis, tax/freight treatment and validity.
Domestic Dispatch and Export Requirements
For domestic orders, give the delivery address and unloading requirements. For exports, specify the destination, delivery terms, packing and marking instructions and the shipping documents required. Aluminium surfaces scratch easily, so state any interleaving or protective packing you need.

Frequently Asked Questions About Aluminium Plates
01Which aluminium alloys do you supply?
The range covers 18 alloys: 1050A, 1350, 2024, 2124, 2219, 3003, 5052, 5083, 5086, 5154, 5454, 5456, 5754, 6061-T6, 7050, 7075, 7175 and 7475, in plate, sheet, coil, strip and treadplate forms.
02Which alloy is best for marine use?
5000 series alloys such as 5083, 5086 and 5456 in H116 or H321 temper are used for hulls and decks, ordered to ASTM B928. Confirm classification-society approval if your vessel needs it.
03What is the difference between 5083 and 6061?
5083 gains strength by cold work and keeps it well after welding, with very good seawater resistance. 6061 is heat-treated (for example T6) for higher strength and machinability, but loses strength near welds.
04What do H32, H116 and T6 mean?
H tempers are strain-hardened: H32 is strain-hardened and stabilised to quarter-hard, and H116 is a marine temper. T6 means solution heat-treated and artificially aged, for heat-treatable alloys.
05What plate sizes are available?
The plate table lists 4–25 mm thick, 1200–2500 mm wide and 2400–12000 mm long; sheet and coil from 0.5 to 6.0 mm; and treadplate from 1.6 to 6.0 mm. Send the exact alloy and size to confirm availability.
06Which specification should I order to?
ASTM B209 (or ASME SB209) covers general aluminium plate and sheet, and ASTM B928 covers marine 5000 series plate. Aerospace alloys are often ordered to AMS specifications; name the one your drawing requires.
07Can aluminium plate be cut to size?
Yes. Plates can be cut to size and plasma-profiled to your drawings. Send the drawing, thickness, quantities and tolerances.
08Which alloys can be welded?
1000, 3000, 5000 and 6000 series alloys are generally weldable. 2000 and 7000 series high-strength alloys such as 2024 and 7075 are normally joined mechanically rather than welded.
09Which certificates should my RFQ request?
Request a mill certificate such as EN 10204 3.1 showing alloy, temper, chemistry and mechanical results, plus classification-society approval for marine use and any third-party inspection.
10How do I obtain a price and delivery offer?
Send the alloy, temper, specification, form, dimensions, quantity, finish, cutting needs, documents, destination and required date.
