7175 Aluminum is a heat treatable forging alloy featuring superior strength and toughness. Alloy with its ability to resistant stress corrosion cracking and minimalweldability, 7175 aluminum is a metal for use in structural applications and fittings including bolts and rivets. AL 7175 is mainly aluminum based, with copper and manganese being the other major chemical properties. Standard specifications for 7175 include AMS 4149, AMS 4344 and more.
Chemistry: The sentence names copper and manganese as the other main elements, but zinc (about 5.1–6.1% for 7175) is the main alloying element and the table gives manganese only as a 0.1% maximum. The table also omits the zinc limit; ask for it on the certificate.

7175 Aluminium Plates: Purchasing Specification
| Requirement | What to specify |
|---|---|
| Alloy and temper | State both, for example 5083-H116 or 6061-T651; properties depend on the temper. |
| Standard | ASTM B209 / ASME SB209 for plate and sheet, or EN 485 / EN 573; ASTM B928 for marine-service plate in the high-magnesium alloys, as the pages cite. |
| Dimensions | Thickness × width × length in mm or inches; number of plates or total weight. |
| Cutting | Sawing or waterjet cutting to your drawing; give tolerances and edge finish. |
| Welding | Weldability depends on the alloy: the 5xxx and 6xxx alloys weld readily, while high-strength 2xxx and 7xxx alloys are generally not arc-welded. State the process. |
| Documents | Mill test certificate (EN 10204 3.1) with chemistry, temper and mechanical properties. |
How the Eighteen Aluminium Alloys Differ
The eighteen pages cover aluminium alloys from several families. The 1xxx, 3xxx and 5xxx alloys are non-heat-treatable and gain strength by cold work, while the 2xxx, 6xxx and 7xxx alloys are heat-treatable. The 5xxx magnesium alloys are the usual marine and welded-structure choice; the 2xxx and 7xxx alloys are the high-strength aerospace alloys.
| Alloy | Family and hardening | Typical use (from the pages) |
|---|---|---|
| 1050A | 1xxx pure aluminium (99.5%), non-heat-treatable | General sheet-metal work, packaging, heat transfer, kitchenware |
| 1350 | 1xxx electrical-grade aluminium (99.5% min), non-heat-treatable | Transformer and switchgear conductors |
| 2024 | 2xxx aluminium-copper, heat-treatable | Aircraft structure, precision fittings, truck wheels |
| 2124 | 2xxx aluminium-copper, high-purity 2024, heat-treatable | Machined fuselage bulkheads, military aircraft wing skins |
| 2219 | 2xxx aluminium-copper, heat-treatable | Space boosters, fuel tanks, high-temperature structures |
| 3003 | 3xxx aluminium-manganese, non-heat-treatable | Heat exchangers, catwalks, food and chemical equipment, roofing |
| 5052 | 5xxx aluminium-magnesium, non-heat-treatable | Fuel tanks, truck panels, small boat hulls, pressure vessels |
| 5083 | 5xxx aluminium-magnesium (4.0–4.9% Mg) | LNG ships, pressure vessels, storage tanks, welded structures |
| 5086 | 5xxx aluminium-magnesium (3.5–4.5% Mg) | Shipyard work, tank cars, patrol and work-boat hulls |
| 5154 | 5xxx aluminium-magnesium (3.1–3.9% Mg) | Wire, rivets and cold-heading applications |
| 5454 | 5xxx aluminium-magnesium (2.4–3.0% Mg) | Road transport, chemical plant, pressure vessels, marine and off-shore |
| 5456 | 5xxx aluminium-magnesium (about 5% Mg) | Welded structures, low-temperature service |
| 5754 | 5xxx aluminium-magnesium (2.6–3.6% Mg) | Treadplate, shipbuilding, vehicle bodies, food processing |
| 6061-T6 | 6xxx aluminium-magnesium-silicon, heat-treatable | Tooling plate, architectural, transport, welded structures |
| 7050 | 7xxx aluminium-zinc-magnesium-copper, heat-treatable | Aerospace fuselage frames and bulkheads |
| 7075 | 7xxx aluminium-zinc, heat-treatable | Airframe structures and highly stressed parts |
| 7175 (this page) | 7xxx aluminium-zinc, heat-treatable forging alloy | Structural fittings, bolts and rivets |
| 7475 | 7xxx aluminium-zinc, controlled toughness, heat-treatable | Wing spars and fuselage bulkheads |
State the alloy, temper and standard on your enquiry. Families are summarised for orientation; the mill certificate gives the actual chemistry and properties.

Applications for 7175 Aluminium Plates
Typical uses include tanks, pressure vessels, marine and transport structures, tooling, aerospace components and general fabrication. Tell us the load, temperature and service conditions so the right grade and thickness can be quoted.
Cutting, Fabrication and Welding
Champak Industries describes full and part plate/profile supply and a plasma-cutting service. Send drawings, quantities, tolerances and edge preparation for your parts. Aluminium plate can be sawn, waterjet cut or machined to your drawing. Weldability depends on the alloy: the 5xxx and 6xxx alloys weld readily with a suitable filler, while the high-strength 2xxx and 7xxx alloys are generally not arc-welded. Send the alloy, temper and drawing with your enquiry.
Testing, Inspection Documents and Traceability
| Requirement | What to identify in the order |
|---|---|
| Mill test certificate | EN 10204 3.1 showing alloy, temper, lot number, chemistry and mechanical properties |
| Temper | Alloy and temper marked on the plate and the certificate (for example H116 or T651) |
| Ultrasonic test | Standard and acceptance class for thick plate, if required |
| Traceability | Lot or plate number transferred to cut pieces |

7175 Aluminium Plates: Frequently Asked Questions
01What is 7175 Aluminium Plates?
7175 is a heat-treatable high-strength aluminium-zinc alloy with superior strength and toughness and resistance to stress-corrosion cracking, used for structural fittings including bolts and rivets and supplied as plate, sheet, forgings and other forms.
02Which specifications does the page list?
AMS-A-22771, AMS 4149, AMS 4179 and AMS 4344.
03Which product forms are listed?
Forgings, round, flat and rectangular bar, rolled and forged rings, discs, sheet, plate, extrusions, billet, ingot and machined parts.
04Can 7175 be welded?
The page calls its weldability minimal. High-strength 7xxx alloys are generally not arc-welded.
