2124 Aluminium Plates

2124-T851 high-purity 2024 aluminium plate for aircraft bulkheads and skins

2124 is a high-purity form of 2024 aluminium, supplied as 1.50–6.00 in plate in T851 temper, with higher fracture toughness than 2024-T851 and good strength retention at elevated temperature. It is used for tanks, pressure vessels, marine and transport structures, tooling, aerospace components and general fabrication. For a quotation, send the alloy and temper, thickness, plate size or cutting drawing, quantity and the delivery destination.

2124 Aluminium Plates

Alloy 2124 aluminum plates are a high purity form of 2024 and are normally supplied in 1.50" - 6.00" plate. Available in T851 temper, this plate alloy exhibits good strength retention and creep resistance at elevated temperatures up to 350 degrees. Fracture toughness levels of 2124-T851 plate are significantly higher than 2024-T851. This alloy is recommended for those applications requiring better short-transverse ductility, high strength and good machinability and has excellent exfoliation corrosion resistance. Fatigue properties of alloy 2124-T851 are similar to those of 2024-T851.

Missing unit: “350 degrees” has no unit. Ask the mill whether 350 is °C or °F and for the data behind the claim before relying on it for hot service.

2124 Aluminium Plates: Purchasing Specification

RequirementWhat to specify
Alloy and temperState both, for example 5083-H116 or 6061-T651; properties depend on the temper.
StandardASTM B209 / ASME SB209 for plate and sheet, or EN 485 / EN 573; ASTM B928 for marine-service plate in the high-magnesium alloys, as the pages cite.
DimensionsThickness × width × length in mm or inches; number of plates or total weight.
CuttingSawing or waterjet cutting to your drawing; give tolerances and edge finish.
WeldingWeldability depends on the alloy: the 5xxx and 6xxx alloys weld readily, while high-strength 2xxx and 7xxx alloys are generally not arc-welded. State the process.
DocumentsMill test certificate (EN 10204 3.1) with chemistry, temper and mechanical properties.

  • Machined fuselage bulkheads
  • Wing skins in high-performance military aircraft

Technical Data Sheet

Silicon 0.20
Iron 0.30
Copper 3.8-4.9
Manganese 030.-0.9
Magnesium 1.2-1.8
Chromium 0.10
Zinc 0.25

Typing error: The manganese limit “030.-0.9” should read 0.30–0.9%. Copper and magnesium limits are the same as 2024, with lower silicon (0.20) and iron (0.30) maxima, which is what “high purity” refers to.

Typical Mechanical Properties

Thickness Tensile Strength Yield Strength Elongation
In. KSI KSI %
1.001-2.00 66 57 5
5.001-6.00 63 54 4

Reading the table: Two thickness bands are listed, 1.001–2.00 in and 5.001–6.00 in. Tensile strength is 66 and 63 ksi and yield strength 57 and 54 ksi, falling with thickness. The temper is not stated in the table.

How the Eighteen Aluminium Alloys Differ

The eighteen pages cover aluminium alloys from several families. The 1xxx, 3xxx and 5xxx alloys are non-heat-treatable and gain strength by cold work, while the 2xxx, 6xxx and 7xxx alloys are heat-treatable. The 5xxx magnesium alloys are the usual marine and welded-structure choice; the 2xxx and 7xxx alloys are the high-strength aerospace alloys.

State the alloy, temper and standard on your enquiry. Families are summarised for orientation; the mill certificate gives the actual chemistry and properties.

Cutting, Fabrication and Welding

Champak Industries describes full and part plate/profile supply and a plasma-cutting service. Send drawings, quantities, tolerances and edge preparation for your parts. Aluminium plate can be sawn, waterjet cut or machined to your drawing. Weldability depends on the alloy: the 5xxx and 6xxx alloys weld readily with a suitable filler, while the high-strength 2xxx and 7xxx alloys are generally not arc-welded. Send the alloy, temper and drawing with your enquiry.

Testing, Inspection Documents and Traceability

2124 Aluminium Plates: Frequently Asked Questions

01

What is 2124 Aluminium Plates?

2124 is a high-purity form of 2024 aluminium, supplied as 1.50–6.00 in plate in T851 temper, with higher fracture toughness than 2024-T851 and good strength retention at elevated temperature.

02

What is 2124 aluminium?

A high-purity form of 2024, supplied in T851 plate of 1.50–6.00 in, with better fracture toughness and short-transverse ductility than 2024-T851.

03

What temperature does 2124 tolerate?

The page says it keeps strength and creep resistance at elevated temperatures “up to 350 degrees”; the unit is not given, so ask the mill whether this is °C or °F.

04

Which applications are listed?

Machined fuselage bulkheads and wing skins in high-performance military aircraft.

05

Can 2124 be welded?

It depends on the alloy and temper. The 5xxx and 6xxx alloys weld readily with a suitable filler; high-strength 2xxx and 7xxx alloys are generally not arc-welded. Ask for welding advice for your alloy.

06

Which certificate should I request?

An EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate showing the alloy and temper, lot number, chemistry and mechanical properties.

07

Can another alloy replace 2124?

Alloys of the same family are comparable, not identical. Strength, corrosion resistance, weldability and formability differ, so confirm any substitution with your engineer.

08

Can 2124 plate be cut to size?

Yes. Plate can be sawn or waterjet cut to your drawing; send the drawing, quantities and tolerances with your enquiry.

09

Which sizes are available?

Availability depends on the alloy, temper and thickness; send the thickness, width and length you need and sizes will be confirmed at quotation.

10

How do I get a price and delivery date?

Send the alloy and temper, thickness, size or cutting drawing, quantity, destination and required date through the enquiry form below, by WhatsApp or by phone.
