Abrasion resistant (AR) steel plate is typically made in the as-rolled situation. These kinds/grades of steel plate merchandise have been evolved specially for long service lifestyles in harsh situations. Abrasion Resistant Plates products are suitable for a variety of programs in areas along with mining/quarrying, conveyors, cloth managing and construction, and earthmoving. Designers and plant operators pick AR plate steel when striving to extend service life of critical components, and reduce the weight of each unit put into service. The benefits of employing wear-resistant plate steel in applications involving impact and/or sliding contact with abrasive material are immense.
Delivery condition: Through-hardened AR plate in the 400, 450 and 500 Brinell classes is normally produced by quenching, or quenching and tempering, as described on our AR Plates page. The as-rolled condition applies to some lower-hardness wear grades. Confirm the delivery condition shown on the mill certificate for the brand and thickness you order.
Steel plate for use in abrasive situations isn't regular as it isn't always governed through any ASTM code or spec. many steel plate producers produce their own brand of abrasion resistant steel and those are usually outstanding through an emblem call observed by means of the hardness of the metal which is measured in brinell gadgets.
Ordering by brand and hardness: Each mill publishes its own data sheet, and the number in the brand name is the nominal Brinell hardness (HBW) — for example 400, 450 or 500. Order by brand and hardness class, or by a hardness range where substitutes are acceptable. Dimensional tolerances and surface condition are usually ordered to EN standards such as EN 10029 and EN 10163-2, as listed on our Rockstar 400 Plates page.

Brands are not automatically interchangeable: Brand names are trademarks of their respective steelmakers. Plates in the same nominal class differ between mills in hardness range, available thickness, chemistry and impact toughness. Treat another brand as a substitute only when your specification or engineer approves it.
Compare Hardness Classes Before Purchasing
| Class | Brinell range listed | Typical selection focus | Check before ordering |
|---|---|---|---|
| 400 | 370 – 430 | Wear with forming, bending or impact; truck bodies, chutes and conveyors | Bend radius, weld procedure and thickness |
| 450 | 425 – 475 | More wear life where forming is limited; buckets, hoppers and liners | Forming limits and impact level |
| 500 | 470 – 530 | Severe sliding abrasion; crushers, screens and cutting edges | Cracking risk under impact, preheat and cutting method |
| 550 / 600 | 525 – 640 | Very high abrasion with little forming | Availability, thickness range and fabrication limits |
Ranges are those listed on our AR Plates page, for orientation. Each brand publishes its own guaranteed range by thickness — for example 360–440 HBW for Abrex 400 — so order against the data sheet of the brand you specify.
How to Select the Right Abrasion Resistant Plate
- Wear type
- Impact
- Low temperature
- Forming
- Welding & cutting
Start with how the part wears: sliding abrasion from sand, ore or coal favours higher hardness, while heavy impact from rock or scrap needs more toughness. Higher hardness generally increases wear life, but it also raises bending forces and springback and tightens preheat and welding requirements. If the part will be bent, choose a class and brand whose data sheet lists a suitable bend radius for your thickness. For low-temperature service, ask for a type with a guaranteed Charpy impact value. This guidance supports purchasing; the equipment designer's approved class and brand decide suitability.
Standards Used When Ordering Wear Plate
| Standard | What it covers | How it is used on an order |
|---|---|---|
| ISO 6506-1 / ASTM E10 | Brinell hardness test (HBW) | Method behind the 400, 450 and 500 hardness classes |
| EN 10029 | Tolerances on dimensions, shape and mass of hot-rolled plate 3 mm thick and above | State the thickness-tolerance class required |
| EN 10051 | Tolerances for continuously hot-rolled sheet and strip | Applies to thinner sheet supplied from coil |
| EN 10163-2 | Surface condition of hot-rolled plate | State the surface class if your application needs it |
| EN 10204 | Types of inspection documents | Specify 3.1 or 3.2 certificates |
| ISO 148-1 / ASTM E23 | Charpy impact test | Only where an impact value and test temperature are specified |
Chemistry, hardness and toughness are guaranteed by each mill's own data sheet rather than by a common product standard. Name the brand and hardness class on the order, and the certificate will report the measured surface hardness for each plate or heat.
Plate Sizes and Delivery Condition
- Thicknessup to 150 mm
- Width2500 / 3000 mm
- Length6000 / 12000 mm
These are the wear plate dimensions listed on our HB 400 Plates page; they describe the range offered, not the size of every plate in stock. Our Wear Resistant Plates page lists the standard sizes below. The thickness range available for each brand and hardness class is set by the mill, and usually narrows as hardness rises.
| Thickness (mm) | Width (mm) | Length (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| 4, 5, 10, 12, 15, 16, 20, 25, 32, 40, 50 | 2000 | 6000 |
| 6, 8 | 2000 or 2500 | 6000 |
| 60 | 1800 | 3400 |
Hardened wear plate is supplied in the mill's delivery condition — normally quenched, or quenched and tempered. Heating above the tempering temperature reduces hardness: our AR Plates page gives 250 °C as the limit for higher-hardness grades. Follow the mill's limits for preheat, cutting and welding.
Applications and Service Requirements

These are material application examples. Final selection depends on the actual service conditions and equipment specification.
Cut-to-Size Wear Plates and Liners
Abrasion resistant plate can be cut to size and shape to your drawings through our wear plate cutting and plasma cutting services, and supplied as wear plate liners. Send the hardness class or brand, thickness, drawing, cut dimensions, quantity and tolerances. Tell us if pieces will be bent, drilled or welded, as hardened plate needs controlled heat input to keep its hardness near the cut edge.
Testing, Material Documents and Traceability
State the certificate type and test scope with the RFQ. A mill test certificate for the plate and the company's quality-system certification are different documents.
| Requirement | What to identify in the order |
|---|---|
| Material certificate | EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 as required, showing brand, chemistry, hardness and delivery condition |
| Hardness | Surface Brinell hardness on the certificate; any additional hardness checks with method and location |
| Heat traceability | Heat or plate number on the plate and certificate; transfer to cut pieces where required |
| Impact and inspection | Charpy test temperature and value where specified; buyer or third-party inspection and report format |
Review our Quality Policy and include your project inspection requirements in the enquiry.

Frequently Asked Questions About Abrasion Resistant Plates
01What does the Abrasion Resistant Plates range include?
The range covers wear plate in the 400, 450 and 500 Brinell classes, as generic AR, HB and BHN plate and as mill brands including Rockstar, Fora, Abrazo, Nicrodur, Brinar, Dillidur, Quard, Arcelor, Abrex and JFE EH. Specify the class or brand you need.
02What do the numbers 400, 450 and 500 mean?
They are the nominal Brinell hardness (HBW) of the plate surface. Each mill guarantees its own hardness range around that value, which can vary with thickness, so check the data sheet of the brand you order.
03Is there an ASTM specification for AR plate?
There is no common ASTM product specification for abrasion resistant plate. Order by brand and hardness class against the mill data sheet, with dimensional tolerances and surface condition to standards such as EN 10029 and EN 10163-2.
04Which hardness class should I choose?
Higher hardness generally gives longer life against sliding abrasion, while lower hardness is easier to bend and weld and copes better with heavy impact. Choose from the wear type, impact level, forming and welding needs of the part.
05Are different brands of the same hardness interchangeable?
Not automatically. Brands in the same nominal class differ in hardness range, thickness range, chemistry and impact toughness. Use another brand only when your specification or engineer approves it, and state on the enquiry whether alternatives are acceptable.
06What plate sizes are available?
Our HB 400 Plates page lists thicknesses up to 150 mm, widths of 2500 and 3000 mm and lengths of 6 and 12 m, and our Wear Resistant Plates page lists standard sizes from 4 to 60 mm thick. Send the exact class, brand and dimensions to confirm availability.
07Can abrasion resistant plate be cut, bent and welded?
Yes, within the limits on the mill data sheet. Bending needs a larger punch radius and die width as hardness rises, and cutting and welding need controlled heat input. Overheating above the tempering temperature reduces hardness.
08Can you supply cut pieces and wear liners?
Yes. Plates can be cut to size and shape and supplied as wear plate liners to your drawings. Send the drawing, thickness, quantities, tolerances and any bending or drilling requirements.
09Which certificates and tests should my RFQ request?
Request the certificate type, such as EN 10204 3.1, showing brand, chemistry and hardness, plus heat traceability. Add any impact test temperature, extra hardness checks or third-party inspection your specification calls for.
10How do I obtain a price and delivery offer?
Send the hardness class or brand, acceptable alternatives, dimensions, quantity, cutting needs, documents, destination and required date. Include export packing and delivery terms when relevant.
