400BHN Abrasion Resistant, Alloy Wear Plate
400 BHN alloy wear plate is a leader in abrasion resistant severe service applications. It is different from commercial grade wear plates. The most recognized names in wear products. You will see the symbol of the Rhino in maintenance installations around the world.
Made in controlled heat lots, that combines unique chemistry and special thermal processing to ensure user-friendly fabrication.
Text from another supplier: The first section was copied from another company’s description of its own wear plate; the Rhino symbol belongs to that company, not to Champak Industries, and the sentence “Only when is specified” is missing that company’s brand name. The plate supplied is identified by the mill and grade on the certificate.
TYPICAL MECHANICAL PROPERTIES
| Brinell Hardness | 400/440BHN |
| Tensile Strength | 180,000 P.S.I. |
| Yield Strength | 140,000 P.S.I. |
| Grain Size | Temp. Martensite |
| Carbon Equivalency | 47 |

Reading the table: These are typical values: 180,000 psi is about 1240 MPa and 140,000 psi about 965 MPa. “Carbon Equivalency 47” means 0.47, and “Temp. Martensite” (tempered martensite) is the microstructure, not a grain size.
TYPICAL CHEMICAL ANALYSIS
| C | Mn | Ph | S | Si | Ni | CR | MO | Other |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| .22 | 1.5 max | .025 | .005 | .50 max | 1.2 max | 1.0 max | .50 max | At mill discretion. (Variances with heat lot) |
Chemistry: “Ph” is phosphorus. Values marked max are maximums; the others are typical.
TYPICAL APPLICATIONS
Chain Conveyors Scrap Baler Plates Coal Chutes Bucket Liner struck Bed Liners Hoppers Fan Blades Wear Plates Levelers Mixer Blades Wear Guides Kiln Blades
Applications list: “Bucket Liner struck Bed Liners” means bucket liners and truck bed liners.
KEY ADVANTAGES
- Excellent Wear Resistance
- Excellent Shock Resistance
- Deep Uniform Hardness
- Predictable In Service
- Low Carbon Equivalency (CE)
- Responds Well To Torch Cutting, Plasma Cutting, And All Forms Of Fabrication
See General Drilling, Forming, and Welding Data.
Supplied in a typical range of 400/440 BHN. The carbon content is restricted to mild steel levels. Alloying elements, such as Nickel, Chromium, Molybdenum, Titanium and Copper are added to ensure depth and uniformity of hardness. These elements promote the creation of carbides which contribute to the unique high wear resistant properties.
Do not settle for other plate products that only offer a surface hardness or that "shock" the plate to hardness with no depth of hardness. These may appear to be wear products, but do not act like them. Only when is specified, are you guaranteed a wear plate with "true" thru-hardness and real uniformity.

Choosing 400BHN Plates
400BHN Plates is in the 400 HBW hardness class. Higher hardness generally lasts longer against sliding abrasion but is harder to bend, cut and weld; where parts also take heavy impact, a tougher, lower class can last longer.
| Class | Nominal hardness | Typical use | Forming and welding |
|---|---|---|---|
| 400 (this page) | About 400 HBW | Dumper bodies, chutes, hoppers, screens | Cold bending and welding with normal care |
| 450 | About 450 HBW | Buckets, liners and heavier wear parts | Larger bending radii; preheat thicker sections |
| 500 | About 500 HBW | Cutting edges, crusher and severe-abrasion liners | Limited forming; strict cutting and welding procedures |
Other BHN classes
Brands of the same class are comparable, not identical; confirm any substitution with the end user. See all brands on Wear Resistant Plates.
Cutting, Fabrication and Welding
Champak Industries describes full and part plate/profile supply and a plasma-cutting service. Thermal cutting softens a narrow edge zone, and thick or hard plate may need preheat before cutting. Weld with low-hydrogen consumables and the mill’s preheat and interpass limits; do not heat the plate above the mill’s tempering limit. See AR Plates for bending and drilling guidance.
Testing, Inspection Documents and Traceability
| Requirement | What to identify in the order |

What Determines the Quotation?
Brand, hardness class, thickness, plate size, quantity, cutting, testing and packing all affect the quotation. Say whether pricing is needed per kilogram, per plate or per finished piece.
Packing, Dispatch and Export Requirements
Give the delivery address, required date and unloading constraints. For export orders, include the destination port, delivery terms and document list.
400BHN Plates: Frequently Asked Questions
01What is 400BHN Plates?
400BHN Plates is wear-resistant steel plate in the 400 Brinell hardness class, ordered by hardness class, with the mill named on the certificate. It is used where abrasion shortens the life of ordinary structural steel.
02What hardness does 400BHN Plates have?
This page gives 400 – 440 BHN. Hardness ranges can fall with thickness, so confirm the guaranteed range for your thickness on the mill’s datasheet.
03Who makes this plate?
BHN 400 is a hardness-class name used by several mills. The mill supplying your order is named on the mill test certificate.
04Which thicknesses are listed?
This page lists 1/8″ – 4″. Availability for each size is confirmed at quotation.
05Is 400BHN Plates the same as other 400 HBW wear plates?
Wear plates of the same hardness class are comparable, not identical. Chemistry, toughness and processing advice differ by mill, so confirm any substitution with the end user.
06Can 400BHN Plates be bent?
Yes, by cold bending with larger punch radii and die openings than mild steel. Follow the mill’s minimum radius for the thickness and rolling direction.
07Can 400BHN Plates be welded?
Yes, with low-hydrogen consumables and the preheat and interpass temperatures the mill gives for the grade and combined thickness.
08What is 400BHN Plates used for?
Typical uses on this page include chain conveyors, chutes, bucket liners, truck bed liners, hoppers and mixer blades.
09Which certificate should I request?
An EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate showing the brand and grade, heat number, chemistry and hardness, plus impact results where you specify a test temperature.
10How do I get a price and delivery date?
