Fabrication of Abrasion Resistant Steel

Welding :

Abrazo 400 can be welded under normal conditions (if you require advice on welding, machining or forming then please contact any one of our offices) using MMA, MOG and SAW without preheat, up to a combined thickness of 60mm, provided hydrogen controlled electrodes are used. Consumables should be dried in accordance with scale 'D' of BS 5135. Consumables should be chosen on the basis of whether or not the weld metal is exposed to wear conditions.

Welding data: This paragraph gives Abrazo 400 welding guidance; use the Fora datasheet for Fora plate. “MOG” means MAG welding, and BS 5135 has been replaced by EN 1011-2.

Machining :

Machining or drilling is more difficult due to hardness. For 400BHN use high-grade cobalt HSS E drilling tools and for 500BHN hard metal drilling tools are necessary.

Forming :

Abrasion steels can be readily cold formed. Compared with steels of lower yields, three factors should be considered:

1. Higher press forces

2. A greater bend radius is required

3. Spring back.

Flame Cutting :

Material can be cut using conventional flame cutting practices without the need for preheat at ambient temperature. The following cutting parameters are recommended:-

65-80  60-100  71  31  13  239  0.57

Flame cutting: Pressures are in psi (lb/in²). Thick or very hard plate often needs preheating before cutting to avoid edge cracking, so follow the mill’s guidance for the thickness ordered.

Milling :

Abrasion resistant steel can be machined by milling.

The following recommendations are given for general guidance:-

Steel Grade Cutting Speed (mm/min) Feed (mm/tooth)
Abrazo 400* 100 0.10-0.15

Cutting speed: The milling cutting speed of 100 is in metres per minute (m/min), not mm/min.

  • For further information on 450, 500 please contact us for details.

Cold Bending :

Where possible, cold bending should be carried out with the bend axis perpendicular to the rolling direction, this being the less onerous of the two directions. The following table contains guidelines for bending to a 90°angle. In general however, bending radii should be as generous as possible.

Bending direction (bend axis) Minimum inside
Bending radius
Minimum die
opening
Perpendicular to rolling direction 3t 8.5t
Parallel to rolling direction 4t 10t

Choosing Fora 450 Plates

Fora 450 Plates is in the 450 HBW hardness class. Higher hardness generally lasts longer against sliding abrasion but is harder to bend, cut and weld; where parts also take heavy impact, a tougher, lower class can last longer.

ClassNominal hardnessTypical useForming and welding
400About 400 HBWDumper bodies, chutes, hoppers, screensCold bending and welding with normal care
450 (this page)About 450 HBWBuckets, liners and heavier wear partsLarger bending radii; preheat thicker sections
500About 500 HBWCutting edges, crusher and severe-abrasion linersLimited forming; strict cutting and welding procedures

Brands of the same class are comparable, not identical; confirm any substitution with the end user. See all brands on Wear Resistant Plates.

Cutting, Fabrication and Welding

Champak Industries describes full and part plate/profile supply and a plasma-cutting service. Thermal cutting softens a narrow edge zone, and thick or hard plate may need preheat before cutting. Weld with low-hydrogen consumables and the mill’s preheat and interpass limits; do not heat the plate above the mill’s tempering limit. See AR Plates for bending and drilling guidance.

What Determines the Quotation?

Brand, hardness class, thickness, plate size, quantity, cutting, testing and packing all affect the quotation. Say whether pricing is needed per kilogram, per plate or per finished piece.

Packing, Dispatch and Export Requirements

Give the delivery address, required date and unloading constraints. For export orders, include the destination port, delivery terms and document list.

Fora 450 Plates: Frequently Asked Questions

01

What is Fora 450 Plates?

Fora 450 Plates is wear-resistant steel plate in the 450 Brinell hardness class, made by Industeel. It is used where abrasion shortens the life of ordinary structural steel.

02

What hardness does Fora 450 Plates have?

This page gives 450 HB nominal. Hardness ranges can fall with thickness, so confirm the guaranteed range for your thickness on the mill’s datasheet.

03

Who makes this plate?

Fora plate is made by Industeel. The mill and heat number are shown on the mill test certificate.

04

Which thicknesses are listed?

This page lists 3 – 60 mm. Availability for each size is confirmed at quotation.

05

Is Fora 450 Plates the same as other 450 HBW wear plates?

Wear plates of the same hardness class are comparable, not identical. Chemistry, toughness and processing advice differ by mill, so confirm any substitution with the end user.

06

Can Fora 450 Plates be bent?

Yes, by cold bending with larger punch radii and die openings than mild steel. Follow the mill’s minimum radius for the thickness and rolling direction.

07

Can Fora 450 Plates be welded?

Yes, with low-hydrogen consumables and the preheat and interpass temperatures the mill gives for the grade and combined thickness.

08

What is Fora 450 Plates used for?

Typical uses on this page include quarry, construction, earthmoving, cement and mining equipment.

09

Which certificate should I request?

An EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate showing the brand and grade, heat number, chemistry and hardness, plus impact results where you specify a test temperature.

10
