Owing to its maximum wear resistant life, these plates are widely used in conveyor parts, grizzly bar, truck bed bodies and more.

The main property of manganese steel sheets is that, it contains 12%-14% of manganese steel. Due to this toughness, these steel plates are able to absorb shock leads safely. The best part about these non-magnetic plates is that during the work hardening process only the outer surface hardens. While the inner layer remains highly ductile.

Composition: Hadfield manganese steel contains about 12–14% manganese and about 1.0–1.3% carbon, as shown in the chemistry tables on our X120MN12 and 12-14% Manganese Steel pages. It is supplied water-quenched (solution annealed) to give a tough, non-magnetic austenitic structure.

Work hardening needs impact: Manganese steel reaches high surface hardness only under repeated impact or heavy pressure. Our product pages quote different in-service figures — 500, 550 and at least 600 BHN — because the result depends on the application. Under sliding abrasion with little impact the surface stays near its delivered hardness, and quenched abrasion resistant plate is usually the better choice.

Welding and heat: Manganese steel can be welded, but it loses toughness if held at elevated temperature. Use low heat input, keep the plate cool between passes and use austenitic manganese electrodes — our X120MN12 page specifies 0.8–1.0% C, 15–18% Mn shielded electrodes. Do not preheat. The same care applies to thermal cutting, and the steel cannot be hardened or softened by normal heat treatment.
