Description of the steel grades

Armor steels Plates are made with a novel direct quenching process. With this method not only a good blast and ballistic protection is attained, but also excellent flatness, surface quality and dimensional accuracy are getting.

Armor 400 steel is made to give defense against high anxiety caused by detonations and blasts.

Reading the text: “High anxiety caused by detonations and blasts” means high stress from detonations and blasts.

Armor 500 is the most appropriate choice, when protection is desired against kinetic energy projectiles i.e. ballistic presentation.

The number of the designation indicate the average Brinell hardness value 400 and 500 HBW, correspondingly.

Chemical composition

The chemical composition is stated in Table 2.

Table references: The text refers to Tables 1 to 5, which are not numbered on the page. Table 1 is the thickness tolerance table, Table 2 the chemical composition and Table 3 the typical mechanical properties, all at the end of the page. Tables 4 (materials testing) and 5 (minimum plate width for guard classes) are not on the page; ask for them if you need them.

Mechanical properties

Typical mechanical properties are presented in Table 3.

The plate must take suitable safety measures to protect themselves and no outsiders must be permissible in the area. The safest location is usually by the winding machine. The handling instructions of the steel supplier and safety instructions of the workshop must be adhered to in detail. New employees must receive appropriate training before they are allowed to process hardened steels.

Reading the text: “Winding machine” appears to mean the bending machine, and “the plate must take suitable safety measures to protect themselves” means the people working with the plate. Follow the mill’s handling and safety instructions.

Materials testing

Materials testing procedure is presented in Table 4.

Suggested minimum plate width of Armor 500 for different guard classes is presented in Table 5.

Heat treatment

Heat treatment is not recommended. If tempering procedure is needed, satisfy, contact technical customer service for further assistance.

Welding

Armor steels can be welded with common welding methods. Austenitic steel welding consumables are recommended. Ferritic welding consumables can be used also, if the strength of the joint is important. If ferritic consumables are used, the need for elevated working temperature has to be studied in order to achieve fault- less weld joint.

Bending

When cold forming Armor 500 steels by bending, the minimum bending radius of the upper tool has to be 8 times the thickness of the material. The corresponding bending radius for Armor 400 has to be 5 times the thickness of the material. Special care has to be taken to the working safety, when these steels are cold formed. Mechanical cutting is not suitable as an edge preparation process for bended parts.

Cutting

Armor steels are well suitable for laser and plasma cut- ting. Mechanical cutting can also be used, if the cutting shears/blades are hard enough and the equipment used is rigid. However, water jet cutting is preferred, because with this method the ballistic properties of the cut edge can be obtained.

Machining

Armor steels can be machined using rigid hard metal tools and rigid equipment. Sufficient lubrication has to be provided and special concentration has to be paid to securing of work piece. The cutting parameters should be chosen in the way that the vibration of the cutting tool and the work piece can be avoided, because vibration decreases the lifetime of the cutting tool considerably.

Occupational safety

Special care must be taken in all stages of treatment of hardened steels. Flanging is taxing due to the high strength and high flexural anxiety of the plate. If the bending radius, for example, is too small and a crack is created in the bending point, the plate may fly from the bending tool in the direction of the bend.

Heavy plates Thickness mm Upper tolerance mm Sheets Thickness mm Upper tolerance, width-wise mm
-1200 1201 – 1500
6.00 – 6.99 0.74 2.50 – 3.00 0.3 0.32
7.00 – 7.99 0.76 3.01 – 4.00 0.32 0.36
8.00 – 9.99 0.8 4.01 – 5.00 0.36 0.4
10.00 – 11.99 0.9 5.01 – 6.00 0.4 0.42

20.00 – 24.99 1.2
25.00 – 29.99 1.3
30 1.4

Reading the tolerance table: The upper tolerances are in mm. Heavy plate thicknesses of 6.00–30 mm are on the left; for sheets of 2.50–6.50 mm the tolerance depends on the width (up to 1200 mm, or 1201–1500 mm).

Armor 500 0.32 0.7 1.5 0.02 0.02 1 2 0.7 0.01

Reading the chemistry: Values are maximum percentages (ladle analysis). Armor 400 and Armor 500 differ mainly in carbon (0.24 and 0.32) and nickel (1 and 2).

Mechanical properties, typical

  R MPa R MPa A % HB t °C Cha
Armor 400 1100 1300 8 360 – 450 -40 20
Armor 500 1450 1700 7 480 – 560 -40 20

Column headings: The headings lost their subscripts. Read them as Rp0.2 (yield, MPa), Rm (tensile strength, MPa), A % (elongation), HB (Brinell hardness), test temperature in °C and Charpy V-notch energy in J. For Armor 400 the table lists 1100 MPa yield, 1300 MPa tensile strength, 8% elongation, 360–450 HB and 20 J at −40 °C.

How the Six Ballistic Steel Pages Differ

The six pages cover armour plate to different mill brands and military specifications. Armor and HSC grades are quenched steels of about 400 to 560 HBW sold by thickness and hardness; the MIL specifications set hardness and ballistic approval for military use. The pages differ in the grade they describe and the data they give.

Cutting, Fabrication and Welding

Champak Industries describes full and part plate/profile supply and a plasma-cutting service. Send drawings, quantities, tolerances and edge preparation for your parts. Plasma and laser cutting are suitable and waterjet is preferred, because it keeps the properties of the cut edge. Weld with austenitic consumables, avoid further heat treatment, and cold-bend only to the mill’s radius and safety guidance.

Armour Plates: Frequently Asked Questions

01

What is Armour Plates?

Armor 400 and Armor 500 are quenched armour steels of 400 and 500 HBW, made by direct quenching, with Armor 400 aimed at blast protection and Armor 500 at protection against kinetic-energy projectiles.

02

What is the difference between Armor 400 and Armor 500?

The page says Armor 400 gives defence against stresses from detonations and blasts and Armor 500 suits protection against kinetic-energy projectiles. The number is the average Brinell hardness, 400 and 500 HBW.

03

What dimensions does the page list?

Heavy plate of 6.0–30 mm and cut lengths with mill edges of 2.5–6.5 mm, in the quenched condition.

04

How should Armor 400 and 500 be cold bent?

The minimum bending radius of the upper tool is 8 × the thickness for Armor 500 and 5 × the thickness for Armor 400, with special care for working safety.

05

Which inspection document is listed?

An EN 10204-2.2 inspection document issued in English, unless otherwise agreed.

06

Can Armour plate be welded?

Armour steels can be welded with common methods. Austenitic consumables are recommended, and ferritic consumables only after checking whether elevated working temperature is needed. Do not heat-treat the plate afterwards.

07

Which certificate should I request?

An EN 10204 inspection certificate showing grade, heat number, chemistry and hardness, plus any ballistic test report that your specification requires.

08

Can another armour grade replace Armour plate?

Armour grades are not interchangeable: hardness, toughness, thickness range and approval differ, so confirm any substitution with the end user or the approving authority.

09

How should Armour plate be cut?

Waterjet cutting is preferred because it keeps the properties of the cut edge; laser and plasma cutting are also suitable. Send drawings, quantities and tolerances with your enquiry.

10
