Standard correction: For plate, 10CrMo9-10 is specified in EN 10028-2, “non-alloy and alloy steels with specified elevated temperature properties”. EN 10273 is the corresponding standard for hot-rolled weldable bars for pressure purposes. Order plate to EN 10028-2. Pipes for hot liquids are tube products made to tube standards such as EN 10216-2.

10CRMO910 Plates: Purchasing Specification

RequirementWhat to specify
Grade and standard10CrMo9-10 (1.7380) to EN 10028-2; state the edition. EN 10028-1 general requirements apply.
Delivery conditionNormally +NT (normalized and tempered); +QT where the standard allows it for heavier thicknesses.
DimensionsThickness × width × length and the number of plates. The table below gives properties up to 250 mm thick; the Chrome Moly Plates page lists chrome moly plate up to 100 mm thick, 2500 mm wide and 12000 mm long.
TolerancesEN 10029 thickness-tolerance class, flatness and any tighter project limits.
ProcessingFull plate, cut piece or profile; drawing, quantity, edge preparation and machining allowance.
Documents and testsEN 10204 3.1 or 3.2, impact-test temperature, UT, Z-quality, simulated PWHT and any hydrogen-service tests, as required.

Dimensions, Condition and Tolerances

Specify thickness × width × length and the number of plates or pieces. For profiles, provide a dimensioned drawing with units, revision and finished-part tolerances. Minimum strength falls with thickness, as the mechanical table shows, so confirm the thickness range and delivery condition before ordering heavy plate.

Optional requirements, not standard features: These are tests and options a buyer can specify. Z15, Z25 and Z35 are through-thickness classes to EN 10164. The “S” numbers are supplementary requirements from ASTM A20, which apply to ASTM / ASME orders; on an EN 10028-2 order, the equivalent options are agreed under EN 10028-1. HIC testing and NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 are mainly sour-service requirements. Name each one you need, with its acceptance criteria. The Ceq formula is the IIW carbon equivalent used to assess weldability.

Why Select 10CRMO910 Plates?

10CrMo9-10 is the 2¼Cr–1Mo grade of EN 10028-2. Its higher chromium and molybdenum give more creep strength and better resistance to oxidation and high-temperature hydrogen attack than 13CrMo4-5, which makes it a standard choice for hot, high-pressure and hydrogen-bearing service. It needs stricter preheat and post-weld heat treatment than the lower-alloy grades.

GradeNominal alloyingComparable ASTM gradeTypical reason to choose
13CrMo4-51% Cr – 0.5% MoA387 Grade 12High temperature, lower alloy cost
10CrMo9-102.25% Cr – 1% MoA387 Grade 22Hotter service and hydrogen duty
12CrMo9-102.25% Cr – 1% Mo, higher strengthA387 Grade 22 Class 2 (approximate)Thinner walls where higher strength is approved

Comparable grades are not interchangeable; the standards differ in strength, testing and thickness rules. 12CrMo9-10 is available on request; see the EN-10028-2 Chrome Moly Steels page.

Cutting, Fabrication and Welding

Champak Industries describes full and part plate/profile supply and a plasma-cutting service. Send drawings, piece quantities, tolerances, edge preparation and machining allowances. 2¼Cr–1Mo plate normally needs preheating before thermal cutting, and cut edges are often ground before welding.

Welding

Use matching 2¼Cr–1Mo low-hydrogen consumables (CrMo2 type to ISO 3580 / ISO 21952, or AWS E9018-B3 / ER90S-B3), with preheat and interpass control set by the qualified WPS.

Post-weld heat treatment

PWHT is normally required. For heavy-wall hydrogen-service equipment, specifications often add simulated PWHT, step-cooling or embrittlement-factor limits; state them in the enquiry.

Testing, Inspection Documents and Traceability

Specify the inspection document, delivery condition and cast identification when ordering, and list every optional test with its acceptance criteria. A management-system certificate is separate from a material inspection document or project approval.

RequirementWhat to identify in the order
