SA 387 CHROME MOLY STEEL more common applications of this grade is Refineries, Power Plants, and certain areas of Chemical Plants in environments with elevated temperatures and limited corrosion concerns. These grades can be specified in either class 1 or 2. It can also be provided in the Normalized & Tempered or Annealed conditions. The annealing process – which would meet Class 1 properties, "softens" the steel to enhance greater forming capabilities.
Reading the grade list: “ASME SA 387 GRADE 5 Class ASME SA 387 GRADE 9 CLass2” should read “GRADE 5 Class 2, GRADE 9 Class 2”, and “CLass1” means Class 1. Current ASTM A387 editions supply Grade 91 at a single tensile level, so “Grade 91 Class 1” and “Class 2” both refer to Grade 91 ordered to the Grade 91 requirements. Each grade and class has its own page in the table below.

Class 1 or Class 2: Compare Before Purchasing
| Consideration | Class 1 | Class 2 | Grade 91 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strength | Lower minimum tensile and yield (see table below) | Higher minimum tensile and yield, allowing thinner walls | Highest in this range: 85–110 ksi tensile, 60 ksi yield |
| Heat treatment | Normalized and tempered, or annealed | Normalized and tempered (or quenched and tempered where permitted); not annealed | Normalized and tempered, with tightly controlled tempering |
| Typical reason to choose | Forming-intensive fabrication; designs based on Class 1 allowables | Higher design pressure or lower weight | High creep strength in power and process equipment |
The class must match the allowable stresses used in your design calculations. Do not substitute Class 1 for Class 2 without re-checking the design.
How to Select the Right SA 387 Grade
- Design temperature
- Pressure and class
- Hydrogen and sulfur
- Code edition
- PWHT
Grades 11 and 12 suit moderate temperatures; Grade 22 is the usual choice for higher temperature and hydrogen service; Grades 5 and 9 are used where high-sulfur refinery streams need more chromium; Grade 91 gives the highest creep strength. Choose the class from your design allowables, then decide on simulated PWHT, impact, ultrasonic and hydrogen-service testing before you enquire. The project engineer's approved grade and specification decide suitability.

The carbon content for plates over 5 in. (125 mm) in thickness is 0.17 max on product analysis.
Reading the chemistry table: “Heat anal.” is the ladle analysis and “Product anal.” is a check analysis on the finished plate, which has slightly wider limits. Although some row headings say “max”, ranges are given where the standard sets both limits. The “A” after the Grade 22 and 21 carbon values refers to the 0.17% note below the table. Grades 2, 21 and 7 are shown for completeness but are not part of this page’s range; if you need one of them, check that the edition you order to still lists it.

Cut-to-Size Plates, Welding and PWHT
SA 387 plate can be cut to size and shape through our cutting services, including plasma cutting. Send the grade, class, thickness, drawing, quantity and tolerances, and say whether edges will be bevelled or welded: thermally cut Cr-Mo edges can harden, so preheating before cutting and grinding the edge are often required.
Welding consumables
Matching low-hydrogen consumables are normally used, for example E8018-B2 / ER80S-B2 for Grades 11 and 12, E9018-B3 / ER90S-B3 for Grade 22 and B91-type consumables for Grade 91. The qualified WPS sets the consumable.
Preheat and PWHT
Grades 11 and 12 are ASME P-No. 4, Grade 22 is P-No. 5A, Grades 5 and 9 are P-No. 5B and Grade 91 is P-No. 15E. Preheat and PWHT follow the code and WPS; give us the PWHT cycle if test coupons need simulated PWHT.
Testing, Material Documents and Traceability
State the certificate type and test scope with the RFQ. A mill test certificate for the plate and the company's quality-system certification are different documents.
| Requirement | What to identify in the order |
|---|---|
| Material certificate | EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 showing specification and edition, grade, class, heat treatment, chemistry and tensile results |
| Simulated PWHT | A20 supplementary requirement S3 with your PWHT temperature, time and number of cycles |
| Impact and ultrasonic tests | Charpy test temperature and energy (S5); UT standard and acceptance level for thick plate |
| Hydrogen service | Any step-cooling, embrittlement-factor or hardness limits your specification sets, for example for Grade 22 reactors |
| Traceability and inspection | Heat and plate number on plate and certificate, transfer to cut pieces, and buyer or third-party inspection |
Review our Quality Policy and include your project inspection requirements in the enquiry.

Frequently Asked Questions About SA 387 Chrome Moly Steels
01What is SA 387 steel?
SA 387 is the ASME code designation of ASTM A387: chromium-molybdenum alloy steel plate for welded boilers and pressure vessels in elevated-temperature service.
02Is ASME SA387 the same as ASTM A387?
ASME adopts ASTM A387 as SA-387, so the requirements match the adopted edition unless ASME notes a difference. State which designation and edition you need, because the certificate must show it.
03Which grades and classes are available?
Grades 5, 9, 11, 12 and 22 in Class 1 and Class 2, and Grade 91, each with an ASME SA387 and an ASTM A387 page.
04What is the difference between Class 1 and Class 2?
Class 2 has higher minimum tensile and yield strength than Class 1 for the same grade. Class 1 may be annealed for better formability; Class 2 is normalized and tempered.
05Why does Grade 91 have no separate Class 1 and Class 2?
Current A387 editions supply Grade 91 at a single tensile level: 85–110 ksi tensile and 60 ksi minimum yield. Order it against the edition in your purchase specification.
06Which SA 387 grade is used for hydrogen service?
Grade 22 is the most common choice for hydroprocessing reactors, with Grade 11 at lower temperatures. The grade is normally checked against API 941 for the operating temperature and hydrogen partial pressure.
07What is the difference between heat and product analysis?
Heat analysis is taken from the molten steel; product analysis is a check on the finished plate and has slightly wider limits, as shown in the chemistry table.
08Should I order simulated PWHT testing?
Order it when the fabricated vessel will be post-weld heat treated and your code or specification requires proof that the plate meets its properties afterwards. Give the PWHT temperature, time and number of cycles.
09Can SA 387 plate be cut to size?
Yes. Send the drawing, thickness, quantity, tolerances and edge preparation. Cr-Mo plate often needs preheating before thermal cutting.
10How do I obtain a price and delivery offer?
Send the specification and edition, grade, class, condition, dimensions, quantity, supplementary tests, cutting needs, destination and required date through the form below, by WhatsApp or by phone.
