EN 10028-2 13CrMo4-5 steel for steel with Cr., Mo.,Cr-Mo steels For high temperature and pressure vessels
EN 10028-2 13CrMo4-5 steel plate/sheet,EN 10028-2 13CrMo4-5 steel plate/sheet, under EN 10028-2 standard, we can regard 13CrMo4-5 steel plate/sheet for steel with Cr., Mo.,Cr-Mo steels used for high temperature and pressure vessels.
13CrMo4-5 steel plate is a kind of steel which with Cr., Mo.,Cr-Mo that mainly applied for high temperature and pressure vessels. The steel grade 13CrMo4-5 is according to EN 10028-2 standard which with the yield strength of 228MPa.The followings are the chemical composition and mechanical properties of EN 10028-2 13CrMo4-5 steel plate.
Yield strength correction: 228 MPa is not the EN 10028-2 value for 13CrMo4-5. In the normalized and tempered condition the standard requires about 300 MPa minimum yield for thin plate, falling with thickness; our EN-10028-2 Chrome Moly Steels page lists 290 MPa minimum for plate over 16 mm up to 40 mm. The 228 MPa figure is close to the 230 MPa minimum of ASTM A387 Grade 12 Class 1, a different standard.
13CRMO45 Plates: Purchasing Specification
| Requirement | What to specify |
|---|---|
| Grade and standard | 13CrMo4-5 (1.7335) to EN 10028-2; state the edition. EN 10028-1 general requirements apply. |
| Delivery condition | Normally +NT (normalized and tempered); +QT where the standard allows it for heavier thicknesses. |
| Dimensions | Thickness × width × length and the number of plates. This page does not publish a size range; the Chrome Moly Plates page lists chrome moly plate up to 100 mm thick, 2500 mm wide and 12000 mm long. |
| Tolerances | EN 10029 thickness-tolerance class, flatness and any tighter project limits. |
| Processing | Full plate, cut piece or profile; drawing, quantity, edge preparation and machining allowance. |
| Documents and tests | EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2, impact-test temperature, elevated-temperature proof stress, UT and simulated PWHT, as required. |
Dimensions, Condition and Tolerances
Specify thickness × width × length and the number of plates or pieces. For profiles, provide a dimensioned drawing with units, revision and finished-part tolerances. EN 10028-2 sets lower minimum strength for thicker plate and, for heavy sections, may require quenching and tempering to reach the properties, so state the thickness early.
Chemical Composition
| Grades | C | Mn | S | P | Si | Cr | Ni | Cu | Mo | Nb+V+Ti |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 13CrMo4-5 | 0.05- 0.17 | 0.40- 0.65 | 0.035 max | 0.035 max | 0.50- 0.80 | 1.0- 1.5 | - | - | 0.45- 0.60 | - |
Chemistry correction: The values above do not match EN 10028-2 13CrMo4-5. Silicon 0.50–0.80% and chromium 1.0–1.5% are the limits for the 1¼Cr grades (13CrMoSi5-5 / ASTM A387 Grade 11). EN 10028-2 sets the 13CrMo4-5 limits below, which also appear on our EN-10028-2 Chrome Moly Steels page. Check the heat certificate against the standard, not this table.
| C | Si | Mn | P | S | N | Cr | Cu | Mo |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.08–0.18 | 0.35 | 0.40–1.00 | 0.025 | 0.010 | 0.012 | 0.70–1.15 | 0.30 | 0.40–0.60 |
Mechanical Properties
| Grade | Permissible yield point ratio | Yield Strength MPa(min) | Tensile Strength MPa | Elongation % (min) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 13CrMo4-5 | - | 228 | 380-550 | 22 |
Mechanical correction: 228 MPa yield, 380–550 MPa tensile and 22% elongation match ASTM A387 Grade 12 Class 1, not EN 10028-2 13CrMo4-5. For plate over 16 mm up to 40 mm, our EN-10028-2 Chrome Moly Steels page lists 290 MPa minimum yield, 450–600 MPa tensile, 19% minimum elongation and 31 J minimum impact energy. Values fall for thicker plate; the standard also gives minimum proof strengths at elevated temperatures.
Why Select 13CRMO45 Plates?
13CrMo4-5 adds about 1% chromium to a ½% molybdenum steel. The chromium improves oxidation resistance and long-term creep strength above the range of 16Mo3, while the grade stays straightforward to weld with preheat and post-weld heat treatment. For hotter service or hydrogen duty, 10CrMo9-10 is the usual next step.
| Grade | Nominal alloying | Comparable ASTM grade | Typical reason to choose |
|---|---|---|---|
| 16Mo3 | 0.3% Mo | A204 Grade B (C–½Mo) | Moderately elevated temperature |
| 13CrMo4-5 | 1% Cr – 0.5% Mo | A387 Grade 12 | Higher temperature and oxidation resistance |
| 13CrMoSi5-5 | 1.25% Cr – 0.5% Mo, higher Si | A387 Grade 11 | Similar duty; specified where the 1¼Cr grade is required |
| 10CrMo9-10 | 2.25% Cr – 1% Mo | A387 Grade 22 | Hotter service and hydrogen duty |
Comparable grades are not interchangeable; the standards differ in strength, testing and thickness rules. Use the grade approved in your design.
Applications and Service Conditions

| Component or duty | Information for selection |
|---|---|
| Boiler drums, headers and steam vessels | Design temperature and pressure, thickness, design life and code (for example EN 12952). |
| Pressure vessels and heat exchanger shells | Process temperature, media, PWHT and code (for example EN 13445). |
| Refinery and petrochemical equipment | Temperature, hydrogen partial pressure, sulfur content and corrosion allowance. |
These are common uses of the grade, not a list of supplied projects. For sustained loading at temperature, design with the creep and proof-stress values the code requires.
Cutting, Fabrication and Welding
Champak Industries describes full and part plate/profile supply and a plasma-cutting service. Send drawings, piece quantities, tolerances, edge preparation and machining allowances. Cr-Mo plate often needs preheating before thermal cutting to avoid hard, cracked edges.
Welding
Use matching 1Cr–½Mo low-hydrogen consumables (CrMo1 type to ISO 3580 / ISO 21952, or AWS E8018-B2 / ER80S-B2) with preheat and interpass control set by the qualified WPS.
Post-weld heat treatment
PWHT is normally required by the design code for welded 13CrMo4-5. Give us the PWHT cycle if test pieces need simulated heat treatment, so the certificate shows properties after PWHT.
Testing, Inspection Documents and Traceability
Specify the inspection document, delivery condition and cast identification when ordering. A management-system certificate is separate from a material inspection document or project approval.
| Requirement | What to identify in the order |
|---|---|
| Inspection document | EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 showing cast analysis, delivery condition, tensile and impact results to EN 10028-2 |
| Impact test | Test temperature and minimum energy, if different from the standard |
| Elevated-temperature proof stress | Verification at a stated temperature, where your code requires it |
| UT, simulated PWHT and traceability | Ultrasonic testing (for example EN 10160); test pieces heat treated to your PWHT cycle; cast number transferred to cut pieces |
