Chrome Moly Plates

Chrome Molybdenum steel (Chromemoly) ideal for use in high temperature process plant applications.

  • Available in thickness range up to 100mm and lengths up to 12000mm and widths up to 2500mm.
  • Chrome Molybdenum steel meets international standard specifications.
  • ASTM/ASME SA/A 387 – Gr.5 Cl. 2, Gr.11 Cl.2, Gr.12 Cl.2, Gr.22 Cl.2, Gr 91 C1.2.
  • BS EN 10028-2 – 16Mo3, 13 CrMo Si 5-5, 13 CrMo 4-5, 10 CrMo 9-10

Reading the grade list: “Cl.” means Class; “C1.2” for Grade 91 should read Cl.2, and ASTM A387 now supplies Grade 91 at a single tensile level rather than as Class 1 or Class 2. Class 1 plate and Grade 9 are also covered by the pages linked below. The EN 10028-2 names are usually written without spaces: 13CrMoSi5-5, 13CrMo4-5 and 10CrMo9-10. 16Mo3 is a molybdenum steel without chromium, included here because it is used for similar elevated-temperature duties.

Champak Industries specialises in chrome moly plates

  • Intended primarily for use in the fabrication of process equipment designed for elevated temperature service.
  • Chrome moly is the most common name for this group but other names that are used include chromalloy, croalloy, and Cr-Mo (pronounced "cro-mo").

How to Select the Right Chrome Moly Plate

  • Design temperature
  • Pressure
  • Hydrogen service
  • Design code
  • PWHT

Start with the design temperature, pressure and the code your equipment is built to. Higher chromium and molybdenum raise creep strength and resistance to oxidation, sulfidation and high-temperature hydrogen attack, but they also tighten preheat, welding and PWHT requirements. Choose Class 1 or Class 2 from your design calculations, and decide early whether the plate needs simulated PWHT testing, impact tests at a stated temperature, ultrasonic examination or hydrogen-service testing. For hydrogen service, grade selection is normally checked against API 941; the project engineer's approved grade and specification decide suitability.

What do chromium and molybdenum do to steel?

Steel of the alloys chromium and molybdenum bring characteristics which are particularly desirable for units operating in high temperatures. Alloys improve high temperature strength, molybdenum improves high temperature creep strength, both improve hardenability and there are additional benefits from wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and impact resistance. At the same time a chrome moly alloy is relatively easy to fabricate.

Corrosion and fabrication: Chromium improves resistance to oxidation, sulfidation and hydrogen attack at temperature, but chrome moly steels are not stainless; equipment still needs a corrosion allowance or lining where the process is corrosive. “Relatively easy to fabricate” assumes qualified welding with preheat and post-weld heat treatment, which become stricter as alloy content rises.

Cut-to-Size Plates, Welding and PWHT

Chrome moly plate can be cut to size and shape to your drawings through our cutting services, including plasma cutting. Send the grade, class, thickness, drawing, quantity and tolerances, and say whether cut edges will be bevelled or welded: thermally cut Cr-Mo edges can harden, so preheating before cutting and grinding the edge are often required.

Welding consumables

Matching consumables are normally used, for example E8018-B2 / ER80S-B2 for 1¼Cr–½Mo, E9018-B3 / ER90S-B3 for 2¼Cr–1Mo and B91-type consumables for Grade 91. Low-hydrogen practice is essential; the qualified WPS sets the consumable.

Preheat and PWHT

Preheat, interpass temperature and post-weld heat treatment are set by the code and WPS and rise with alloy content. Tell us the PWHT cycle so test coupons can be given simulated PWHT if your specification requires it.

Testing, Material Documents and Traceability

State the certificate type and test scope with the RFQ. A mill test certificate for the plate and the company's quality-system certification are different documents.

RequirementWhat to identify in the order

Frequently Asked Questions About Chrome Moly Plates

01

What are chrome moly plates?

Chrome moly (Cr-Mo) plates are low-alloy steels containing chromium and molybdenum, made for welded boilers, pressure vessels and process equipment in elevated-temperature service. Common standards are ASTM A387, ASME SA387 and EN 10028-2.

02

Which chrome moly grades are available?

ASTM A387 / ASME SA387 Grades 5, 9, 11, 12 and 22 in Class 1 and Class 2, Grade 91, and EN 10028-2 grades 16Mo3, 13CrMo4-5, 13CrMoSi5-5 and 10CrMo9-10.

03

What is the difference between Class 1 and Class 2?

For the same grade, Class 2 has higher minimum tensile and yield strength than Class 1. Grade 91 is supplied at a single tensile level in current A387 editions.

04

Is Grade 22 the same as 10CrMo9-10?

Both are 2¼Cr–1Mo steels with comparable nominal chemistry, but they are made to different standards with different requirements. Do not substitute one for the other without approval under your design specification.

05

Which grade is used for hydrogen service?

Grade 22 (2¼Cr–1Mo) and Grade 11 are common for hydroprocessing equipment, with the grade checked against API 941 for the operating temperature and hydrogen partial pressure. Specify any additional hydrogen-service tests in the enquiry.

06

What plate sizes are listed?

Thicknesses up to 100 mm, widths up to 2500 mm and lengths up to 12000 mm. Send the exact grade, class and dimensions to confirm availability.

07

Do chrome moly plates need preheat and PWHT when welded?

Usually yes. Preheat and post-weld heat treatment are set by the design code and the qualified welding procedure, and they become stricter as chromium and molybdenum content rises.

08

What is simulated PWHT testing?

It is a supplementary requirement in which plate test coupons are given the same heat treatment as the fabricated vessel before mechanical testing, to show the plate still meets its properties after PWHT. State the PWHT temperature and time if you need it.

09

Are chrome moly plates corrosion resistant like stainless steel?

No. Chromium improves resistance to oxidation, sulfidation and hydrogen attack at temperature, but chrome moly steels are not stainless and normally need a corrosion allowance or lining in corrosive service.

10

How do I obtain a price and delivery offer?

Send the standard and edition, grade, class, delivery condition, dimensions, quantity, supplementary tests, cutting needs, destination and required date through the form below, by WhatsApp or by phone.
