Champak Industries supplies EN 10028-2 chrome moly and molybdenum steel plate, including 16Mo3, 13CrMo4-5 and 10CrMo9-10, for boilers, pressure vessels and heat exchangers built to European codes. Plate can be cut to size and profiles. Send the grade or material number, delivery condition, dimensions, quantity and test requirements for a quotation.

EN-10028-2 Chrome Moly Steels

The European steel standard well known for pressure vessel purposes is EN 10028-2 which includes chrome moly plates.

The overall designation of the standard is "flat products made of steels for pressure purposes.

Non-alloy and alloy steels with detailed improved temperature properties.

Chrome moly material grades with various portions of chromium and molybdenum.

Extensively equal to the ones inside the American standard ASME SA387 and ASTM A387

EN 10028-2 chrome moly plate.

Champak Industries supplies chrome moly plates to EN 10028-2, 16MO3 PLATE, 13CRMO45 PLATES, 10CRMO910 PLATES and, when required by our customers, can offer cut to size plates and profiles to meet exact requirements.

The tables below give records referring to the chrome moly grades that are to be had Champak Industries.

In plain terms: EN 10028-2 is titled “Flat products made of steels for pressure purposes – Part 2: Non-alloy and alloy steels with specified elevated temperature properties”. Its chrome moly grades are broadly comparable to ASTM A387 / ASME SA387 grades, but not equal: the two standards differ in requirements and testing, so one cannot replace the other without approval. The tables list seven grades; 16Mo3, 13CrMo4-5 and 10CrMo9-10 have their own pages, and the others can be requested.

How to Select the Right EN 10028-2 Grade

  • Design temperature
  • Thickness
  • Impact temperature
  • Design code
  • PWHT

16Mo3 suits moderately elevated temperatures; 13CrMo4-5 and 13CrMoSi5-5 cover higher temperatures; 10CrMo9-10 is used for hotter service and hydrogen duty; X10CrMoVNb9-1 gives the highest creep strength. EN 10028-2 sets strength values that fall with thickness and gives minimum 0.2% proof strength at elevated temperatures, so check the values for your thickness and design temperature. The project engineer's approved grade and specification decide suitability.

Grade names are shown in capitals; in the standard they are written 16Mo3, 13CrMo4-5, 13CrMoSi5-5, 10CrMo9-10, 12CrMo9-10, X12CrMo5 and X10CrMoVNb9-1. These are cast (ladle) analysis limits; product analysis tolerances also apply. The inspection document shows the actual heat analysis.

Mechanical Properties

Mechanical properties for plates thicker than 16 mm up to 40 mm thick applicable to the transverse direction

YIELD (MPA) TENSILE (MPA) ELONG. A (%) IMPACT (J)*

X12CrMo5 320 min 510 - 690 20 min 40 min
X10CrMoVNb9-1 445 min 580 - 760 18 min 40 min

Using these values: “13CrMoSi5.5” should read 13CrMoSi5-5. The values apply only to plate over 16 mm up to 40 mm thick; EN 10028-2 gives lower values for thicker plate and, for some grades, different values for each delivery condition. The asterisk on “IMPACT (J)” has no footnote on this page: the standard sets the impact energy at a stated test temperature, so state the temperature you need in the order.

Cut-to-Size Plates, Welding and PWHT

As stated above, EN 10028-2 plate can be supplied as cut-to-size plates and profiles. Our cutting services include plasma cutting. Send the grade, thickness, drawing, quantity and tolerances, and say whether edges will be bevelled or welded; Cr-Mo edges often need preheating before thermal cutting.

Welding consumables

Matching consumables are normally used, for example Mo-type for 16Mo3, CrMo1 for 13CrMo4-5 and CrMo2 for 10CrMo9-10 (ISO 3580 / ISO 21952 designations). Low-hydrogen practice is essential; the qualified WPS sets the consumable.

Preheat and PWHT

Preheat and post-weld heat treatment follow the design code and WPS and rise with chromium and molybdenum content. Give us the PWHT cycle if test pieces must be heat treated before testing.

Testing, Inspection Documents and Traceability

State the inspection document and test scope with the RFQ. A plate inspection document and the company's quality-system certification are different documents.

RequirementWhat to identify in the order
Inspection documentEN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 showing grade, delivery condition, cast analysis, tensile and impact results
Impact testTest temperature and minimum energy, if different from the standard
Elevated-temperature proof stressVerification at a stated temperature, where your code requires it
Ultrasonic and PWHTUT standard and class (for example EN 10160); heat treatment of test pieces to your PWHT cycle

Frequently Asked Questions About EN 10028-2 Chrome Moly Steels

01

What is EN 10028-2?

EN 10028-2 is the European standard for flat products of non-alloy and alloy steels for pressure purposes with specified elevated-temperature properties. It covers chrome moly grades such as 13CrMo4-5 and 10CrMo9-10.

02

Which EN 10028-2 grades have their own pages?

16Mo3, 13CrMo4-5 and 10CrMo9-10. 13CrMoSi5-5, 12CrMo9-10, X12CrMo5 and X10CrMoVNb9-1 are shown in the tables and can be requested.

03

Is 13CrMo4-5 the same as ASTM A387 Grade 12?

They have comparable 1Cr–½Mo chemistry, but the standards differ in strength levels and testing. Do not substitute one for the other without approval under your design specification.

04

Is 10CrMo9-10 equivalent to Grade 22?

Both are 2¼Cr–1Mo steels with comparable nominal chemistry, but they are made to different standards. Use the grade your design code and drawings specify.

05

What do +N, +NT and +QT mean?

They are delivery conditions: +N normalized, +NT normalized and tempered, and +QT quenched and tempered. EN 10028-2 sets which conditions apply to each grade and thickness.

06

Why do the mechanical values depend on thickness?

Thicker plate cools more slowly during heat treatment, so EN 10028-2 sets lower minimum strength for thicker ranges. The table on this page applies to plate over 16 mm up to 40 mm thick.

07

Is 16Mo3 a chrome moly steel?

No. 16Mo3 is a molybdenum steel with about 0.3% molybdenum and no chromium addition, but it is used for similar elevated-temperature pressure equipment and is listed with this range.

08

Which inspection document should I request?

Pressure-equipment projects usually request EN 10204 3.1, or 3.2 where a third-party inspector must witness testing. State the impact temperature and any other tests needed.

09

Can EN 10028-2 plate be cut to size?

Yes. Cut-to-size plates and profiles can be supplied to your drawings. Send the thickness, quantity, tolerances and edge preparation.

10

How do I obtain a price and delivery offer?

Send the grade, delivery condition, dimensions, quantity, tests, cutting needs, destination and required date through the form below, by WhatsApp or by phone.
